Best Cemetery Without Gravestones

Charles Towne Landing

Charles Towne Landing
Old Towne Road. West Ashley

If there's a symbol that best illustrates the legacy of slavery, it might be a nondescript field at Charles Towne Landing. This peaceful grassy loam, adorned with trees and bordered by a green hedgerow, is a black cemetery first used at the end of the 19th century, a time when many former slaves would have died. The most striking thing about it is that it's empty. Not one gravestone to show a human being was laid to rest here: someone's father, brother, wife. A humbling image to ponder. —John Stoehr
