Muhiyidin d’Baha

Staff Pick

You know what we’re talkin’ about — hell, all of the world knows what we’re talkin’ about. Charleston Black Lives Matter leader Muhiyidin d’Baha became a global sensation (and, let’s be real, a fucking hero) when he leapt across George Street to rip the Confederate flag from the grasp of a member of the South Carolina Secessionist Party. The party was there to protest Bree Newsome, who was scheduled to speak that night at Sottile Theatre. Newsome scaled a flagpole in Columbia shortly after the Emanuel Nine were murdered by a white supremacist who clung to the racist ideology of the “rebel” flag. Nothing can quite compare to Newsome’s act of courage, but d’Baha’s leap for justice comes pretty damn close. —Kelly Rae Smith
