Best Ban On Bans

Plastic Bag Ban Ban

Staff Pick

After two coastal municipalities passed restrictions on single-use plastic bags and containers, it was time for those in the South Carolina Statehouse to take a stand. S.C. Rep. Eric Bedingfield called on his fellow lawmakers to pass a bill prohibiting local municipalities from imposing any new bans on plastic bags, arguing that such efforts pose a threat to businesses, big and small alike. The debate on the House floor quickly became one of economics versus home rule and the environment, with coastal leaders stressing the impact that plastic litter can have on seaside communities. Ultimately, members of the state House of Representatives voted to stop any discussion of the bill until 2018 — banning the bag ban ban for another year. —Dustin Waters
