Battle Royale

When: 2009
Price: Free
Two months ago, the College of Charleston’s Arts Management Program and the Arts Management Department put out a call for talent for a special event promoting local music, dance, and visual art. In this week’s student-organized Battle Royale competition, bands, solo acts, singers, DJs, dancers of all genres, and visual artists were invited to apply for finalist spots. Entrants were required to submit either a YouTube video, a DVD, a sound file, or a digital image demo of their performance or artwork. On Thursday evening, from 7-10 p.m., the fine finalists will share some of the spotlight at the Stern Center (71 George St.). Prize winners will be determined by audience vote with help from guest judges Allison Sprock (of Allison Sprock Fine Art), Robert Ivey (veteran stage performer and artistic director of the Robert Ivey Ballet), and your humble music editor. Food from local restaurants and items from local stores will be available for purchase. A graffiti T-shirt stand and a dress-up photo booth will be on hand, too. Prizes will be awarded for best in division and best in show. —T. Ballard Lesemann
