Rose Anne Baldwin will be the first to admit that owning a vineyard is not a simple hobby. Whether it's manually pruning the 13 acres of vines or keeping tabs on natural enemies like insects, the Baldwins' job could certainly be classified as labor-intensive. However, if Baldwin's abundant laughter is any indication, she wouldn't trade it for anything. In mid-August, amid baskets of ripe ison muscadine grapes and golden-freckled tara scuppernongs, Baldwin let us try her favorite grape, the rose champagne summit, which seems to blush in all shades of peach. The pick-your-own grapes sell for $1.50-$1.75 per pound. There are 10-12 varieties, the largest of which is the snappy-skinned supreme which grows to plum size. They ripen at different times so each week there are new flavors at peak ripeness up until late September. Then it's time for hand-trimming and cleaning the vines and, eventually, fertilization.
