The baroque composer Bach wrote a lot more than those famous fugues that seem specifically designed to trip up music theory students. This weekend, First Scots Presbyterian Church is showcasing some of those works at their annual Bach Festival, which will feature three performances of vocal, orchestral, and organ music. “This is our outreach to the community,” says First Scots’ director of music Dr. JeeYoon Choi. “Life is busy, so my personal hope is that people can come and be healed through music.” The events include a Baroque Vocal Chamber Concert and Organ Concerti by Candlelight, a performance of the organ concertos by Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, Mozart, Haydn, and Stanley. On Sunday, the festival finale will begin with two orchestral works, Graupner’s “Overture” and Telemann’s “Water Music,” leading up to a performance of Bach’s “Magnificat” by the Festival Kirk Choir and the Charleston Southern University Concert Singers. Soloists and a chamber orchestra will join these 55 vocalists, making this concert one of the most uplifting ways we can think of to end your week.
