Avondale chART Walk Block Party and Fundraiser

When: Sun., Nov. 20, 12-5 p.m. 2011
Price: Free
Artists like Shepard Fairey and the elusive Banksy have reframed our perception of graffiti. What was once considered vandalism has been parlayed into street art. Avondale’s Alicia Alley, behind Gene’s Haufbrau, has embraced this concept with the Charleston Art Outdoor Initiative and Gallery (chART) earlier this year. Their block party in June premiered murals by local street artists, and event founder Geoff Richardson says it was very well received despite the sweltering heat. “Since the last block party, we’ve had people ask to do a farmers market back here, to use it in their music videos, all sorts of things,” Richardson says. “It’s exploded on its own, and it’s amazing to see people taking the art and using it in different ways.” chART will host another block party this weekend to celebrate their recent expansion beyond the Avondale Point Business District. See the more than 15 murals, plus live mural painting, breakdancing, and even “hair graffiti” performed by Richardson, who’s the owner of Lava Salon. DJs Dub6 and MJ12 will play old-school hip-hop while dance teams like Dancefx perform routines. Food trucks Hello My Name is BBQ and Diggity Doughnuts will be on site all afternoon.
