"Fear of losing control of their slaves eventually drove the South to secession." This is simply not true. Have you ever heard of the original 13th amendment? The so-called Corwin Amendment? It made slavery permanent. It passed Congress before Lincoln was sworn into office. He mentioned it in his inaugural address. What was his opinion of it? "I have no objection to its being made express and irrevocable." So this begs the question: why did South Carolina secede if an amendment was in the process of being sent to the states that would have made slavery permanent? How could they lose control of their slaves if the Constitution was about to be amended to make slavery permanent?
