Re: “Over 200 rally for Charleston Birth Place’s survival

I have 3 boys. The first was born in 2010 at Trident and I definitely didn't feel as safe as I did at CBP. When my son turned over and we lost his heartbeat on the monitor, it took over 10 mins to get someone into my room, even with my husband going out to the nurses station to tell them. When my son was crowning, even the nurse couldn't get the doc into our room. She left to go get him without bringing another nurse in. I almost delivered my first child unassisted in a hospital!! At CBP, I gave birth both times while there were other women there in labor. With my middle son, there were 3 births within just a few hours. I got there while the first mom was in labor and while I was laboring, another mom came in at 9 cms. My son arrived last and I NEVER felt neglected dispite being there 24 hrs. I don't know how they did it, but they met all our needs and there was always someone by my side. With my last baby, born just 8 weeks ago, there was another mom having a rough labor and I delivered my son within just an hour of arriving. They still managed to stay with both of us and its a good thing that I had someone with me because when my lil guy decided to arrive, he came in one push. At the hospital, no one would have gotten there in time. My care was 100% better at CBP from start to finish than it was with an OB and the hospital. If DHEC were to implement this new take on an old law, all they would be doing is SLOWING care for emergencies. Do they really not see that? There's nothing an OB could do at the birth center that a midwife wouldn't have already done, so if a transfer is needed, they meet at the hospital. That's worked wonderfully for 6 years. Why the sudden change?? When any hospital even comes CLOSE to the stats that CBP has and has an OB in the L&D floor at all times, then they'll have an argument, but until then this is completely wrong. When they are not requiring hospitals to have the same requirements that the birth centers do, something is wrong.
