Over the last year, Archnemesis’ Justin Aubuchon has quietly grown to become a successful touring musician. Beginning his career as a keyboardist with the Chronicles of the Landsquid, Aubuchon branched out in 2008 to focus on his sampling and producing skills as the solo act M.O. Theory. When Asheville-based world-electronic group Telepath disbanded, bassist Curt Heiny teamed up with Aubuchon, forming Archnemesis. They released their debut EP, Diamonds and Glass, as a free download last September. There’s a full-length follow-up due this fall. In the meantime, the duo has been busy playing to big crowds at festivals like New York’s Camp Bisco, Michigan’s Electric Forest, and the Blackwater Music Festival in Florida, impressing peers and attracting co-bill invites from producers like Eliot Lipp and Pretty Lights. Archnemesis creates 85 percent of their own samples, drawing from their backgrounds as players, and selectively picks the rest from hooks, horn lines, and drum beats that fit the dance-party mood they create on stage. “When you do hear a sample that’s not ours, you’ll know it wasn’t us that wrote it, but you probably won’t know what it is,” says Aubuchon. “Most of what we use is pretty obscure, and we flip it and twist it and make it our own.”
