Re: “CCSD schools to open tomorrow, flood-impacted students to receive excused absences

Well said !! I too support closing schools accordingly. But closing the entire district due to poor weather has gotten out of hand. An example of this was due to freezing temperatures last winter. As parents we understand that freezing temperatures require warmer clothing and even keeping play outside limited. But closing schools because of these temperatures would be silly in Canada for example. As a kid growing up in Canada, we would never find our schools closing unless there were several feet of snow on the ground and roads were not plowed.
My children attend Mount Pleasant Academy in the old village area of Mount Pleasant. I was surprised to hear it was closed due to the flooding and weather. The school certainly was not affected by flooding nor were many streets in our area. Yes there was heavy rain. But are we going to close down all of our schools every time a heavy rain is pending? Or should we save these closings for severe storms such as pending hurricanes?? Let's not fall victim to crying wolf and wasting our children's valuable school time. Allow them to attend school while letting their parents work to provide for their families instead of having to stay home from work and provide child care!
Lastly, I would like to say I understand there were areas in Charleston that were severely flooded and my thoughts and prayers are with those families affected by the storm.
