Amos Lee w/ the Watson Twins

When: Thu., April 28 2011
Price: $34.50
The Watson Twins possess sultry, head-turning voices, breathy come-hither coos, siren sweeps, and girl-group grace. Raised in Louisville before moving to Los Angeles to pursue their careers, Chandra and Leigh Watson harbor the same power, organic warmth, and dramatic character that Neko Case showcases. While sweet sibling harmonies are pretty sublime, they’ve had more success picking material than writing their own. After kicking around the Silverlake, Calif., scene for a few years, the Twins made their debut backing Jenny Lewis on 2006’s terrific Rabbit Fur Coat. Though their earliest efforts (including the Lewis disc) displayed country flair, their two full-lengths evoke a hazy 1970s radio broadcast from Laurel Canyon. Their earthy, inviting vocals are great with that smoky club vibe, as evidenced by their cover of Sade’s “The Sweetest Taboo” off their great new Night Covers EP. They also did a wonderfully mournful folky take on the Cure’s “Just Like Heaven” on their 2008 debut LP Fire Songs. Their original tunes haven’t risen to those same heights — in part because they’ve yet to craft melodies as powerful as their voices. The songs on their latest album, Talking to You, Talking to Me, have sumptuous textures and hooks. And oh, those voices. They open for Amos Lee this evening.
