As the great grandaughter of J.E. Gilstrap, I was actually at that lecture this morning. It was an excellent look at the Willie Earle case. Stephen Lowe also did a wonderful paper on the civil rights movement within SC. Of course, Willie Earle's death was a horrible tragedy, not only for his family but for the whole upcountry region. However, when I try to find some "good" thing that came out of Willie Earle's lynching, I can't help but think that the press surrounding the lynching helped push the civil rights movement along as ironic as that may sound. That is not in any way meant to promote lynching or renegade justice.
