Re: “Let's not let Charleston become Myrtle Beach

Mr. Moredock,
I am President of local chapter of an international motorcycle club “The Red Knights”. We are a club for members of the fire service, and their families, who enjoy riding motorcycles, not antisocial misfits as your editorial implies. Also we are a club not a gang! First off let me quote our Clubs mission statement:
To promote motorcycle safety.
To project a positive image of motorcycling.
To enjoy the fraternity of FireFighters.
To engage exclusively in social, charitable and educational activities directed at increasing the general understanding of, enjoyment of, competency, sportsmanship and participation in the sport of Motorcycling.
That said, I want to say I take offense to your unsubstantiated editorial. The first thing I learned in journalism 101 was, “ if you don’t know it, don’t print it!”
To stereotype all people who ride bikes as violent, antisocial, criminals is just wrong. Most of the bikers I know are the first say, “Hey lets do a function to raise funds to help for this sick child or charity.” On any given weekend during the riding season there are several charity rides going on. One of the largest of which “Toys-for-Tots” run is put on by who? The Lawriders, You want to call them a bunch of antisocial criminals?
I suggest you research and get your facts when you write something like this. I realize that if you could not have sensationalized you editorial with the unsubstantiated references to violence you could have gotten any one to read your writings, but that’s pretty poor journalism in my opinion.
As to your comment “motorcycles are completely out of place in our historic district.” Using that mindset, do cars have a place in the Historic District? Maybe Joe Riley should only allow horses and buggies. That would be historically correct. I pay for licenses, insurance, tags and taxes (which by the way, taxes on a motorcycle are higher than other vehicles) I should be allowed to go anywhere any other vehicle is allowed, including the historic district.
