Re: “Lowcountry conservatives need a shift to win back disengaged voters

I've been hearing this argument most of my adult life, i.e., that Republicans need to sound more like Democrats in order to be elected, expand the tent, etc. etc. etc.. This is a formula for more status quo Republicans who lick their fingers and move in whatever direction the wind blows. Its gotten us latter day sell-out's like John Kasich, who indeed left the party with as he became a milk toast moderate. We've had this with John Boehner and Jack Ryan, and its gotten the concerns of Republican base exactly nowhere. Joe Cunnigham IMO ran on empty promises, chief among them was not voting for Nancy Pelosi for speaker. Anyone who knows a thing about D.C. politics knows Pelosi will be speaker regardless of what one freshman rep from South Carolina might say. And if by some great fluke of fate she isn't, we will still have a Democrat agenda being pushed in the house. Dittos for his promises about off shore drilling, which falls under the purview of BOEM via Department of the Interior, which is overseen by the executive branch. The bottom line is that if the Fed gets enough money to lease off shore areas for oil or gas they'll take it and all Joe Cunnigham will be able to do about it is go swimming. What are you talking about when it comes to taxation to fund schools? The poverty in SC schools has little to do with money and more to do with a system that doesn't prepare our young people for college, or jobs after graduation. Springfield Elementary just got new facility a year ago, but its still the same old same old Common Core, push them through the system school that it always has been. The conservative solutions to problems are already on the table, insisting our candidates lean to the left won't make them happen.

Re: “Charleston protesters will stand against firing of Jeff Sessions in Marion Square on Thursday at 5 p.m.

Nice of the City Paper to give the MoveOn.org rent-a-mob some free advertising. Heightened concerns? Robert Mueller has been on a taxpayer funded spare no expense fishing expedition for two years and came up with a sardine and a guppy. The big worry is that the political weponization of the DOJ will come to an end and it will go back to being what its supposed to be.

Re: “Joe Cunningham pulls off upset, wins close race against Trump-backed Arrington

Billy-exactly. I wish it had been different, we'll hope for the best, and we'll pray for all of our representatives and officials-regardless of what party they are.

Cheryl, good for you. You're right, we shall see if Cunningham is the moderate Democrat he sold himself as. IMO, the "Pelosi Promise" was empty, in as much as it doesn't really matter what one freshman congressman has to say about who becomes speaker, (she will) what matters is that there will be a Democrat as speaker, and the DNC will be pushing their agenda, and Mr. Cunningham's election helped make that happen.
