For a kid, Alice in Wonderland is pure magic and fantasy. For an adult, Lewis Carroll’s drug addiction explains a lot of his creativity (a mushroom that makes you grow larger or smaller, come on). Alice in Wonderland in all its whimsical glory will be brought to the stage by the Columbia City Ballet this weekend. Director William Starrett got the idea from the Royal Ballet in London, and since then, he has been carrying a copy of Carroll’s classic with him. After researching and rereading the story several times, Starrett says learning more about the author helped him with the creative process. The ballet debuted last weekend in Savannah, Ga., and after seeing that performance, Starrett has tweaked the ballet, meaning Charleston audiences will have an exclusive version of Alice’s whimsical imagination. “When you finally get to see your vision on stage, the story becomes clearer,” says Starrett. His interpretation of the ballet follows the traditional story but will keep audiences chuckling with the musical choices and some help from the famous white rabbit. While the dancers have embraced the comical elements of the story, Starrett says that dancing brings the narrative to life. “A lot of the choreography is done by Carroll. When he says, ‘the king put on his spectacles and slammed the book closed,’ I want to bring that to the audience.” Alice in Wonderland is the Columbia City Ballet’s final show of their first season in Charleston.
