Re: “Stegelin: Trey Gowdy, witch hunter

During Reagan's two terms, five bombings at American embassies killed ninety-five people (not to mention the 241 Marines killed when their barracks was bombed). How many witch hunts did Congressional Republicans hold back then? I believe the answer is zero.

Re: “The Agenda: S.C. schools likely to comply with bathroom policy; N. Chs. considers $15 wage; Conservative senators targeted

Is there any conclusive evidence that, after a minimum wage increase, employment decreased (because the cost of labor has increased to the employer), or that it has increased (because the workers are spending more money in other businesses)? The studies I have seen are inconclusive. It seems the minimum wage issue is more a partisan dividing line which defines which team you play for.

Re: “The Agenda: Haley & Ansari in TIME; Graham & Garland meet; Sanders & The South

@Curtis Brown: Bernie is "the real democrat"? That sounds a lot like some Republican factions calling others "RINOs". I still hold out hope that ideological purity is not a requirement for membership in either party, that there is enough room for civil discourse and disagreement within them, but that hope has been dwindling for years.

BTW, IIRC Bernie was elected to his House and Senate seats as an independent, and not a Democrat.

Re: “The Agenda: SC Republicans take hard line on SCOTUS; Haley backing Cruz; Gas tax off the table

There are 24 Republican senate seats up for election in November. The current seat-holders are all saying that an important presidential decision should not be made by the current president, but by his successor. How many of them are saying that important Senate votes should not be made by themselves now, but by whomever wins their own seats after November?

Re: “The Thinning Blue Line

@Cid95: Yes, there are studies that suggest violent crime rates among whites and blacks are similar when comparing equivalent socio-economic groups. But, rather than go down the rat hole of the quality of such research papers, let's just say we don't know.

Set that aside; are you suggesting that the police are only stopping blacks who are in actuality violent offenders, and that they knew this a priori? Is that what was happening with stop-and-frisk in NYC? A complaint in the black community is that everyone is looked at as a violent criminal and treated as such.

It sounds like your position is that the police have a greater chance of having a violent encounter when approaching blacks than whites. There are many in the black community that believe precisely the same thing: that they have a greater chance of being beaten, tasered, or shot than whites whenever they have any encounter with the police. What is going to change that? More aggressive policing?
