Are "time period" and just plain ol' "time" the same thing?

If they are -- and they seem to be -- then why add the pointless "period" after "time?"

I would like to secede from those who use "time period," "irregardless" and all other Barney Fife-type speech -- no matter what state or section has the misfortune to claim them.


Could a non-slaveholding state have been a part of the Confederacy if it wanted to join?
