WOODLANDS CHEF LEAVING TOWN

Just weeks after the Dining Room at Woodlands Resort & Inn was given as many stars as possible by Mobil Travel Guide, Executive Chef Scott Crawford announced to the Post and Courier that he's stepping down. Crawford insists there are no hard feelings towards the resort, and that his move to the Sea Island resort in Georgia was not planned. The Woodlands is currently searching for a replacement to fill the big shoes of Crawford, and we hope that their high standards won't change. --Katherine DuPre

THE ART OF HAND POURING

Maybank Highway is moving on up. All sorts of new hot spots are popping up on the road that connects James and Johns Islands, including the Pour House's El Bohio Cuban restaurant, J Paul'Z (opening this week as well), and now, Muddy Water Coffee Bar. George Worthington and Michele Hoban, the husband and wife who own and operate the cafe, moved here from Seattle, where they loved the coffee house atmosphere. Hoban says that they hope to draw a crowd that can "appreciate a good hand-poured espresso drink," which happens to be their specialty. Unlike other corporate coffee spots, which shall remain nameless, every pot of coffee and espresso at Muddy Water is handmade. No automatic coffee-brewing buttons here. Hoban and Worthington are also offering wine, desserts, and pastries for the after-dinner crowd. Muddy Water opens this week at 1739 Maybank Highway. Call 795-0848 for more information. --KD

AND THE AWARD GOES TO...

Last Saturday, local celebrities and chili lovers gathered for a spicy fundraiser. Over 400 people convened at the Maritime Center, where local radio, television, and public figures prepared their own chili recipes in a cook-off and silent auction to benefit the John Ancrum SPCA. Tanya Brown from the "Two Girls & a Guy" morning show on 95SX won an emotional "Best in Show" with a recipe straight from her grandmother, who died this past spring. The recipe involves tossing in, of all things, Hershey's Kisses and baking the batch overnight. Patrick Villegas of WCSC TV 5 had a batch that was decided "Most Unique," while Leo and Alison from Y102.5 won two awards, "Most Traditional" and "Best Presentation." City of Charleston Fire Chief Rusty Thomas showed everyone up by driving his chili in on a DNR boat and winning the first ever "Most Enthusiastic Chili Delivery Award." Chefs Frank Lee from Slightly North of Broad, Bob Waggoner of Charleston Grill, and Ciaran Duffy of Tristan judged the event, which raised around $25,000 for the shelter.
