It should be pretty clear to anyone reading this thread of comments and "Linda" and, most likely a few friends she has recruited, are on a personal mission to smear Halls Chophouse and the Halls themselves.

My wife and I have been to Halls 6 or 7 times. We've been to some of the best steak houses in the Country (NYC, Dallas, Atlanta, etc) and Halls is one of the best. The steaks are fantastic, on of the best caesar salads anywhere, and a world class wine list. Perhaps Billy can be friendly to a fault, but you have to appreciate the families commitment to this restaurant and their patrons. They are always there and try to get to know people. The bar downstairs is a lively scene, so its not the most quite restaurant in town. So, if you are looking for a very quite dining experience where you don't see or here from the owners, perhaps you should try another Charleston steakhouse, Penninsula Grill is fabulous.

My wife and I own vacation rental properties in Savannah and St Simons Island. The city of Savannah recently passed an ordinance that regulates short term rentals. It requires owners to register with the City, pay taxes on the rentals, and adhere to certain rules including restricting the number of people that can occupy residents by number of bedrooms. Owners are also accountable for nuisance type behavior and can lose their certificate if found guilty of multiple violations. The ordinance makes sense and has been a great solution for the city and its property owners.

In St Simons Island, a recent court decision ruled that one particular house known around the neighborhood as "the party house" was in violation of zoning laws as it was being used as commercial facility. The house was very large and frequently hosted weddings and receptions. In St Simons and Savannah, the vast majority of the offenders are larger houses. They tend to attract larger groups coming to town for weddings or other events. Larger groups that get together stay up later, have parties and tend to engage in more obnoxious behavior.

I love the city of Charleston and its residential character and applaud the City's efforts to protect it. However, the City's abolishment of any short term vacation rentals goes too far and is most likely un-constitutional. Eventually, someone may challenge this ordinance in court and win. I would encourage the City to talk to the City of Savannah' tourism department about it's ordinance and how it has kept vacation rentals from ruining the historic district. A compromise solution does exist that would allow property owners to enjoy the use of their property while maintaining a reasonable level of control.

Naysayers that claim that vacation rentals would proliferate across the Charleston peninsula and ruin the residential character of the neighborhoods are simply wrong. The high property values in Charleston, especially in south of broad and several other prestigious neighborhoods, would be far to high to work economically as a vacation rental. The properties in dire need of repair and restoration would be the most likely targets for vacation rentals. This could lead to many of these properties being renovated and cleaned up, a positive for the city and the neighborhood.
