Re: “Saltwater Cowboys

I had dinner there last night with my family. It's a pretty big place with lots of indoor / outdoor areas to eat drink (bars). As the "Cowboys" in the name implies, bbq is a key part of the menu which is unusual, historically speaking, for Shem Creek places. Plus fried and some other seafood (ceviche for example). Good appetizers.

The location and views are great, obviously, since it doesn't have another place next to it. Lots of young bar crowd also, so make sure you are in the "area" you want to be in if you're not in that crowd. We were seated quickly; our waitress was very professional and service was fast.

The fried grouper was really good and so were the chicken wings, the bbq was a bit dryer than I prefer but still good. I think for a family dinner on the creek, I would still go to Shem Creek Bar & Grill. For drinks and bar food, this place is good.

Re: “Slavery apology a good step, but Charleston must also take down Confederate monuments

I assume we also need to rename Washington square, too, since he owned slaves? Why stop halfway when cleansing history, comrade? Quit selling out, get woke.

Or maybe we could just understand that the idea of applying today's standards to the past will result in a silly and endless game of street names, statues, buildings, etc being renamed.

OMG - Did you know that in Rome there is a column dedicated to an expansionist dictator of a slave owning empire that didn't allow women to vote!? #teardowntrajanscolumn

Re: “After Annapolis, a threat to journalism that we're not discussing

The attacks on freedom of speech (from leftist nutjobs) are indeed worrisome. "I support freedom of speech, but that doesn't include 'hate speech', and hate speech is anything I don't agree with. Punch a Nazi! And a Nazi is anyone that uses hate speech."

The 1st Amendment is practiced more vibrantly today in the US than ever. New media is crushing traditional news sources.

Re: “Political turbulence aside, becoming a U.S. citizen remains an exciting prospect

"...a country whose political rhetoric toward immigrants has grown more acidic over the past couple years."

Towards ILLEGAL immigration (which Clinton I, Obama and Clinton II also decried at various convenient times), NOT lawful immigration. The inability or unwillingness to distinguish between the two is a common failure of the modern American left.

Having said that, our immigration system has been really messy for decades. We should do a top to bottom revamp of it. Step one is to separate the categories of foreign workers and lawful immigrants. Scrap the goofball "diversity visa lottery." Make a real global merit-based immigration system in parallel with a foreign worker program that reacts to the needs of the US economy.

Walk out on an official event where President Trump is speaking = Bravo! The Resistance! Fuck Trump!

Walk out of a commercial performance that you bought a ticket for but don't like = How dare you! You owe the performers your loyalty!

Re: “Writing about gun violence means not writing about killing myself

Id say that food poisoning (suicide) is obviously a problem, which we all knew anyway. I wouldnt try to conflate it with cheeseburgers (guns) or rope (hanging, the main suicide method used in Japan). To do either would be a harmful distraction from the primary topic at hand, which is the causes and preventative actions of people deciding to end their lives.
