Re: “Teachers raise questions over state guidelines for fall school reopenings

Both AccelerateED and AccelerateSC are feel-good public relations communication strategies. Designed to get back to the prior humming normal. These work products were not developed by epidemiologists. They were developed by pandemic novices serving on a quickie task force assembled by the Governor. The stated mission was to get us back to humming.

Safety standards are criteria to judge compliance designed to keep us in the safe zone. Inspections provide certainty that the implementation is correctly executed. When done periodically, safety continues to remain in place. Food inspections applying explicit standards keep illness producing organisms and viruses out of our bodies.

The reason we mask, distance and shelter at home is that the coronavirus is airborne.

The pages of the AccelerateED report tries to paper over the primary route of the coronavirus into our lungs- airborne. (The AIRBORNE science link is below). AccelerateSC does not even try to paper over the characteristics of the air we breathe at work. It ignores airborne transmission and the standards needed to stop the infection in the workplace. The air in restaurants and bars requires a laser focus.

Try. Do your best. To the extent practical. Incorporate by reference CDC guidelines that would get used as a reference to develop standards. Ignore DHEC inconsistency and silence on various topics. Bring in other guidance to muddy the water so culpability is amorphous and ill-defined.

The business community wants to be held harmless from the liability from damage done to employees, clients, customers and passersby by their COVID-19 protections. Shortcuts, half measures and cost minimization gives uneven protection in the absence of explicit standards. When the courts need to decide culpability the inchoate set of guidances gives an automatic pass. The plaintiff needs to prove noncompliance to general guidances that were followed in spirit. Absent real standards pretty much most anything goes.

Children, teachers, aides spend hours each day in classrooms. The cooled air is recirculated along with the coronavirus. This workplace needs to be safe for them, and so they do not carry the infection home. At the very least DHEC needs to develop science-based pandemic control standards for interiors spaces. This new normal needs new standards well expressed.

Re: “Our View: We would be wise to address climate change in pandemic response

Like the post-hurricane rebuild, instead of replacement we can choose to invest in what creates the better normal. Our past errors and inferior visions can be righted. We can choose better by putting in place our richer understanding. In this case lessening the insults to nature that supports all of us at lower costs. All four of these investments of thought, time and money pay us back many times over. After recognition, comes the will, then action to bring this about.

Re: “Brack: Just wear the dang mask

Put a mask on all the in-place Civil War Statues that have us tied up in knots and put them into our currently needed public service.

CDC How COVID-19 Spreads…

Research: Why of wearing a mask? It is airborne.…

Wear a mask.…

As states across the country have gradually pushed forward with reopening in recent weeks, protesters representing a small but apparently growing movement — especially within the Republican Party — have continued to push for it to go faster. And one very visible thing has somehow turned into a perceived political statement: wearing a mask.

Governor McMaster is intentionally contributing to the ambiguity. Masks are mandatory if we a going to get control of the disease and needless death of people in your age group.
