Re: “A healthy ocean in 2050? We need to act now.

Thank you, Rep. Cunningham! I'm so glad you recognize the importance of our waterways to our Lowcountry way of life! Sea-level rise is affecting so many of the things we love: Sea Turtles, Birds, our marshes, our beaches, our coastlines, our homes, our infrastructure, roads and bridges. And, yes, our livelihoods. We simply must address the ways that our dependence on oil is giving rise to carbon pollution which is changing our climate for the worse, acidifying and warming our seas. We now have more high-heat days, worse and more threatening storms, more floods, more drought, more illnesses from increasing insects and heart events. Our waterways and our very lives are at risk. Our home values and our businesses also suffer. Already the reinsurance industry is balking at covering at-risk communities such as ours. Homes on the coast are getting harder to sell. I ran into a friend yesterday who lives on one of our coastal islands. After choosing the home of her dreams here, 4 years of hurricane preparations are forcing her to move out of the lowcountry, further inland. She called herself "a climate refugee." If we want to protect our oceans and our way of life, we had better act now!
