Re: “A musician's case against the $5 cover charge

The bar owners dropped the ball over the last 40 years. If they increased the cover by one dollar every eight years then we would be at $10 by now. My wife theorizes that $5 was easier to deal with for making change. If that was a big reason, that's bullshit on the part of the owners. Sad thing is she could be correct. About a year ago I conducted a survey on my band's Facebook page about paying $10 at the door and 100% of the people who participated said they had no problem with that yet a couple of days ago I posted a message on a local (Minneapolis) musicians network FB page and I ran into the opposite reaction among most of the musicians. I got the tired old "people don't even want to pay $5" to which I responded that the person walking away because of a $5 cover charge is the same person who feels that music and art for that matter should be free for them and are probably downloading most of their music for free. So what if you loose 2, 3 or 4 at the door that night. Good riddance. Drink and food prices in bars have doubled or more in the last 3 to 4 decades and there is no reason musicians shouldn't paid be more as well. Just another age old battle in the "screw the musician" war. The bars may argue they are doing us a favor by providing a place to show off our talent but quite honestly we are the ones doing them a favor. Most of my band's fan base wouldn't normally go to the venues we play (and we play nice clubs not dives) unless we were there in fact there are a couple of bars they didn't even know existed until we brought them in. I can confidently say there are a few bars in Minneapolis that would have gone under years ago if they didn't have live music. Having said that I don't understand why the local musicians didn't demand an increase in the cover charge 20 years ago or more.
