Re: “New Charleston City Council members have the voters' permission (and a responsibility) to push for change

Good column. Single member districts were created to improve diversity in government, not to create enclaves where the needs of the at large voters are ignored or sidelined by parochial interests. I for one regret the tendency of many single district candidates and incumbents to neglect what are the highest and best interests of the community they must serve.

Re: “Stop dividing America with words evoking racial terror

Racism is Americas original sin. Slavery built the agricultural South and Industrial North. A bloody war costing 620,000 deaths and hundred of thousands of wounded followed. A period of Reconstruction attempted to provide voting rights, land ownership, voting rights and elected leaders but was ended prematurely in the political compromise of 1877 which ended Union oversight of southern states and opened the door to Jim Crow laws and state constitutions that removed those hard won rights to the formerly enslaved and imposed rigid segregation by race. Nothing gained; everything lost. Todays racial divisions, wholly unnecessary and cruel, continue to deprive this promising democracy of the strength that comes from unity, cooperation and respect. Lets get over this harsh and mean spirited past and build a society based on social justice and forgiveness.

Re: “Seems like there's one bad idea after another these days

Wendell Gailiard is normally a level headed legislator and well worth public attention. However his ideas about naming a public building after Robert Ford is a mistake. Ford never rose to even average levels of respect or accomplishment during his career anf Wendells proposal, for whatever reason, should not be taken seriously and I doubt it will.

Re: “Climate change is real no matter who you vote for, but who you vote for has never mattered more

Thank you, Jeremy, for your efforts to place issues related to climate change at the tips of issues at the local, state, national and international levels. If these related issues are not effectively addressed comprehensively and soon, we need not worry about the rest of our public agenda: it wont matter if life on the planet is diminished or even extinguished.

Re: “A trip to the Lynching Memorial, where the truth lives for those who don't

Thank you, Jeremy, for such an honest and powerful accounting of your visit to The Lynching Museum. This telling is much needed in a nation, state and communities where there is so much discovery needed to educate people and begin the eradication of racism. Your leadership is much appreciated. By the way, the tomb of my great x 5 grandfather. Anthony Mathewes, on my mothers side of my family, is in Circulars Churchyard. Only recently did I learn that this first generation Charlestonian was a slave owner. You can Google his last will and testimony to receive the shock I did when I read it. Be well. Keep teaching.
