Re: “Il Cortile Del Re

i have eaten at this restaurant only once. I took my wife, my son and his wife. The food is ok and the service is ok. There are much better Italian food options in Charleston.

Re: “Domestic spying is legal because the government says it is

I don't know what the fuss is about. The government amasses cell phone records not the content of the calls. With that they can after the shits set off the Boston bombs discover who the shits talked to in the period leading up to the bombing. They can also look at their emails. Sorry, that doesn't offend me. If they have a suspected terrorist the can monitor his emails and if they have a court order, listen to his calls. This doesn't offend me either. Anyone who sends an email that doesn't understand that millions of people may see it is an idiot.

Re: “Ken Vedrinski opening Italian seafood resto on IOP

Great news. We have a home near Sullivan's Island, have been eating at Lucca since it opened. Look forward to Ken's new restaurant. Some of the comments here border on paranoid and the "dago" remark is classless, rude and stupid. What would Mayor call soul food? I think we all know. Mayor, go crawl back under the rock where you exist.

Re: “White reporters report on white candidates at CNN debate

It is simply unbelievable that the "moral majority" doesn't want to discuss personal shortcomings of candidates in a year in which the republicans who vote for Gingrich are running against a sitting president who has been flawless in his personal and family life. For those of you who think Gingrich has repented, you have got to be kidding me. He is a hippocritical, ego-maniac, who has zero percent support from those who served with him in Congress. After being stripped of his speakership, fined $300,000, 2 divorces, 2 known cases of adultery, he uses his position to sell access to congress. We have a president whom we might not agree with on every issue, but he won't embarass us. Newt, on the other hand, does not have enough self control not to.

Re: “The lessons to be learned from the Casey Anthony verdict

I think the verdict is a shame. However, part of the reason for it is that the prosecution overeached in making this a death penalty case or a first degree murder case. I believe if it had been only a manslaughter case, the result would have likely been different. Very likely there would have been a guilty plea in exchange for a sentence of 20 or so years. I was a criminal defense lawyer for over 30 years and was not impressed by the defense. The defense all along should have been that there was no proof beyond a reasonable doubt. The accidental drowning theory that was discussed but never backed up with any evidence was a risky tactic. Likewise the theory of the father and brother sexually molesting the defendant, killing the child and intimidating the defendant from reporting it, could and should have made the jury reject the entire defense. Sometimes being lucky is better than being talented.

Re: “Is it safe to even write this in South Carolina?

Will is right. South Carolina does not have real dissent and debate within its borders. We never even have had a two party political system. Once we were all democrats and now we are all republicans. And it is not working. If you compare us to our sister states of North Carolina and Georgia, we lag in nearly every statistical category that you can name. Our per capita income is lower, high school graduation is lower, life expectancy is lower, poverty level is higher. If you compare USC to UNC or UGA academics, its a joke. I have been a SC resident for over 60 years and it is truly a state of embarassment that is the butt of national media jokes. An example of our politics is Gov. Haley replacing a USC trustee whose gift of over $70,000,000 to USC was less generous than her appointee's gift to her campaign of $4500. The circus continues.
