Prom: The Sequel

When: Sat., Feb. 20, 10 p.m. 2010
Price: $10

Somewhere in America today, a high school girl is buying her prom dress, wishing she could wear a tuxedo. Somewhere else, a high school boy is too scared to ask his best friend to be his date — because his best friend is also a boy. Sponsored by the College of Charleston Gay Straight Alliance and the College Activities Board, Prom: the Sequel will give Charleston’s LGBT community a chance to do the dance the way they always wanted at a prom that welcomes diversity.

“A lot of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people who came out of the closet in high school missed out on the opportunity to experience prom on their own terms,” says Melissa Moore, program director of We Are Family. Guests are encouraged to wear whatever they want — from formal to campy — to the dance at Pantheon, hosted by Ava Clear.

The money raised will benefit Charleston’s first Pride Parade on May 15. “We hope that everyone has a great time and leaves feeling a sense of community, a sense of pride, and a sense of excitement for the Pride Festival,” Moore says. —Susan Cohen
