When: May 22-23, 8 p.m. 2009
Phone: (888) 374-2656
Price: $15
A Piccolo Fringe event. Like a cross between Lou Reed and William Shatner, The Bitter Poet comes from New York City to perform his guitar-driven poems in this darkly humorous and satirical one-man show about searching for True Love and the contortionists you meet along the way. The Bitter Poet is written and performed by New York City actor (and native South Carolinian) Kevin Draine. Recommended for adult audiences. (1 hr.)

The Buzz:

WHAT IS IT? A bitter New York poet with a guitar, talking and singing about women and relationships. South Carolina native Kevin Draine developed this darkly humorous persona in New York clubs and performance spaces, mixing rants and songs with spoken-word poetry that doesn’t fit under the category of comedy. This isn’t simple stuff, but the juxtapositions are sly and intriguing.

WHY SEE IT? This short-run act from New York is one of the festival’s most unusual selections, and it arrives with a reputation as either The Doors meet Jack Nicholson or some unholy love-child of Lou Reed and William Shatner.

WHO SHOULD GO? People who aren’t tempted to run screaming from the room when a performer says “fuck on stage, and particularly those who prefer the risky edge to the comfy middle. (Dan Conover)
