Re: “Pence's Liquor and Wine

I actually appreciate this guy. He's voluntarily enforcing parking. We'd have to pay a bureaucrat a very high salary and pension to do the job he has volunteered to do for the community for free.

Guys like this used to keep the community safe. They were the first responders before the police showed up half an hour later and didn't seem to care. I feel safe knowing that this man is keeping a watchful eye and protecting the shopping center.

He deals with lunatic drunkards and winos all day. He has to be short with people. All things considered, the man displays extreme patience considering what he deals with.

Plus he has the best liquor and wine in town.

Re: “The Dinghy Taproom and Kitchen

Cool place, indoor dining room connects with outdoor (heated enclosed) patio. Space is notable for vintage neon '96 Wave' sign overlooking festivities. Good vibe, good music, great location (as the dark side goes).

Re: “Edison James Island

This new kid on the block is not messing around. Edison has already proven itself to be a serious contender in the Charleston restaurant scene, holding its own with bar-setting cornerstones like Macintosh and, yes, Husk, but with a price point about 20% lower than those and an atmosphere that is unpretentious and approachable. Edison offers an eclectic mix of delectable, multi-cultural menu items, which are a refreshing deviation from the clich, all-too-familiar phrases like "Refined Southern" that dominate Charleston's acclaimed restaurants. Edison is on James Island, and I'm happy about that; for the most part, the area has never really housed this caliber or style of food before. Dining options for James Islanders have now expanded beyond pizza places and Kickin Chicken.

Chef Owner Joel Lucas's talent, creativity, and gustatorial gusto are brought to life in dishes like Smoked Sausage Pops, Vietnamese Pho Tacos, and Duck Confit Lasagna, and his wine genius wife, co-owner, and bar manager Chelsea can offer you the perfect wine or craft beer pairing. Every dish delivers nearly every sensory perception of food in relation to taste and texture. With the seemingly simple Goat Cheese Tartine appetizer, for example, you get smokiness and crunch from the toasted hazelnuts, creamy and tart from the goat cheese, and sweet from the agave. Such is the visible brilliance of Lucas's mind and palate.

Let's talk about dishes. Vietnamese Pho Tacos - finally, a solution for people who love the flavors of pho but hate soup. The Edison Grilled Cheese is the grilled cheese your mom was too lazy to make when you were a kid. Similarly, the Sausage Pops are a delicious adult version of corn dogs. For a quick snack, grab the amazing Tuna Poke and a glass of white wine. The combination of parsley oil, truffle, and earthy Mepkin Abbey mushrooms in the Herb Gnocchi is an umami bomb you didn't realize you needed in your life, which gets soaked up by the accompanying cauliflower and heavenly pillows of gnocchi. Get your fix for the classic combination of Calvados, pear, and duck with the Duck & Ravioli. Like most people, when I go to a restaurant I'm usually seeking a juicy, melty, almost overwhelmingly fatty mouthfeel; the Braised Pork Cheeks entree delivers this in spades, with the cranberry compote providing the perfect counterbalance of sweetness and acidity. The house-made veggie chips may be the most underrated thing on the menu, so always get a side of those.

I've always sat at the bar, so I can't comment on tables and servers, but they seem fine. Wednesday is half price bottles of wine. All in all, it's a hidden gem. Go here.

Re: “Kickboxer: Retaliation

I love that it is a step up from Kickboxer Vengeance. It has great martial arts action including the 2 on shot takes. It is incredible that at 61, Alain Moussi, does all of his fight scenes and stunts including flying kicks, somersaults and falls. For great combat scenes this is the movie to watch !

Re: “From Combahee to Winyah

The exhibit that saw on display really touch me. I do agree with the photographer. The things that enticed, so many to move here will be gone. The overdeveloment of south carolina coastline will destroy the beauty.

The main problem was that the beach they were on was pebbly, not sandy. So after experimenting with a kind of underwater carpet, Mr. Grey ended up wearing little "gel shoes."
