Re: “Protesters threaten to shut down Ravenel Bridge toward Mt. Pleasant at 4 p.m.

What a shame. Frustrating commuters will do little to solve the problem. Awareness has been raised, the majority of folks are disgusted with the death of Mr. Scott. Black Lives Matter protest was well covered locally and nationally. The message is going to be lost in the discussion of the disruptive protest.....not effective at all. I guess it makes them feel like they are doing something....but they really need to do is to continue the dialogue with community leaders, politicians and the police departments.

Re: “Protesters threaten to shut down Ravenel Bridge toward Mt. Pleasant at 4 p.m.

Assholes. I understand you are pissed. The video pissed me off as well. But you have no right to block innocent people from making a living or getting home to their families. We all know people aren't just going to leave when asked to do so. This is an issue with police and the local government. Go protest outside of their buildings.

The response to the Walter Scott shooting was the perp being charged with murder. THIS is nothing but a self promoting attention grab.

They should all be arrested immediately for disorderly conduct, disruption of the peace or any other type if crime that applies. It saddens me that people don't understand how to make a statement or push for change without causing more harm

Negativity breeds negativity! This stupid stunt has what to do with the shooting? Why don't you all find a positive way to draw attention to any issue?

Re: “Protesters threaten to shut down Ravenel Bridge toward Mt. Pleasant at 4 p.m.

This isn't going to bring the kind of attention you want to this issue. The officer has been fired and it's overwhelmingly likely he'll also be convicted of 2nd degree murder. NCPD has responded by immediately ordering body cameras for all police to deter such events in the future, and the general population of Charleston is already in agreement with you. If the people at Black Lives Matter can tell me how this action won't be detrimental to public perception of their cause, I could potentially support this tactic, but as I see it, this is doomed to create more ill will than it alleviates.

Not to mention, the Ravenel bridge isn't even in the right jurisdiction. It's between Charleston City and Mt. P, the shooting happened in N Charleston. If you really want to ruin people's commute, block the I-526 junction. That'd shut the whole city down and it's really close to N. Charleston city hall.

Re: “The Capobiancos should stop fighting for custody of Baby Veronica

The C's have destroyed V's privacy with their media stunts, including but not limited to Troy the (Dis)Locator and Dr. Phil, demonstrating that they aren't fit to raise a goldfish. They got Veronica into SC under false pretenses-lying on the ICPC form. The only way to get Veronica out of OK was to say she was White and Hispanic. Any would-be adoptors have an OBLIGATION to make sure that the adoption is above board and that both bio parents agree to relinquish the child. They also have a legal obligation to be truthful on paperwork. Underlying all of this- adoptive parents want white-ish babies. there are so many black babies and older children who need loving homes. The adoption industry is catering to this desire with few restraints, creating human rights abuses. Children have the RIGHT to be raised by a fit, loving bio parent as stipulated in the rest of the civilized world. Throw in the fact that SC just skipped over the best interests hearing- and this whole thing stinks to high heaven. The C's are moral degenerates for thinking they are right to take another man's child from him.

Re: “The Capobiancos should stop fighting for custody of Baby Veronica

I have to say...I am still just stunned at times that we are even having this discussion! I am an adoptive mother. The day my son's first mom signed away her rights and accepted her inability to parent him safely, I cried...I cried for her, I cried for him, I cried for the way things SHOULD be between a child and their parent. There is simply NO justification for putting this child through the fight she has been through. There is NO justification for trying to take a child from a loving biological parent. There is no argument that will make that right. She cannot be protected from the harm that will come from a move such as this at the age of four! It is a tragedy when it cannot be avoided. IT CAN BE AVOIDED IN THIS CASE. I hope the C's do exactly as the author of this article says. No one is saying it will be easy...but, it will be right!

Re: “NAACP leaders respond to Marley Lion/Trayvon Martin comparison

Weak. That is such a weak justification for hypocrisy. Four people involved in the cold blooded murder of Marley who did NOTHING, one person involved in the killing of Treyvon done while Treyvon was straddling him, beating his head into the pavement and punching him to the point of breaking his nose. Regardless of how it started, the fact remains Treyvon was in the process of beating Zimmerman without mercy, while the other kid was merely sitting in his car, minding his own business at the wrong place and time.

Re: “NAACP leaders respond to Marley Lion/Trayvon Martin comparison

The naacp wanted georges head on a stick. Period. Trayvon martin was not an angel. Any death is a tragedy but when blacks get killed by whites its automatically racial. George is not guilty just like florida knew he was not. They only went forward because of the whining. Now Eric Holder will do as told and charge him federally. Then luckily our white republican judges at the federal level can put this to rest and Obama and Holder look good and maybe George Z. Can try to have some sort of life again. Sad prediction but the sheeple in this country will be pacified by it.

Re: “The Capobiancos should stop fighting for custody of Baby Veronica

Awesome article.. Very well said.It is a very sad situation and my heart breaks for the Capobiancos- but this child should not be taken from her father. Mr. Haire's comments are correct- the damage has been done and there is no way that taking this child from her biological father at this stage in her life will help her or the Capobiancos. They are no doubt wonderful loving people, but they need to let go and find another little child that needs them. Ronnie does not.

Re: “We shopped at Mt. Pleasant's new ALDI grocery store so you don't have to

This article is basically the POV of a privileged person who didn't bother to do her research. ALDI addresses several major issues we face as a nation. Allow me to explain them, since this intern didn't bother in the article she wrote for a newspaper. 1. The obesity epidemic. Struggling Americans face food deserts and a basic lack of nutritional, healthy, and affordable food. Aldi purposefully places their stores in areas which break up food deserts, which is why this location is wasted on the wealthy people people of Mt. P. This article itself illustrates how privilege can create bias owing to lifestyle marketing. 2. They hire from the community and pay a competitive wage, with benefits. 3. Their food is ethically sourced and sustainable. We all need to use our dollars to create a better world. 4. Reduced packaging pledge. We are killing our planet and no amount of young republican snark is going to change that. I could go on. Many people rely on ALDI to feed their families safe, healthy, and affordable food. A more interesting article would have been from a parent who could suddenly aford to feed their family well, but instead we get this snotty drivel from a seemingly privileged intern. What a waste of a GREAT topic. Please do better next time City Paper, and maybe assign articles regarding equity in food supply to actual writers.

Re: “The Capobiancos should stop fighting for custody of Baby Veronica

I guess my thoughts on this are: 1. This case should never have been made public, it's a violation of Veronica's rights since the child's identity in custody cases or any case involving a minor is protected. Taking it public victimized Veronica and probably will for years to come. Unscrupulous people will undoubtedly try to profit by writing books and making movies about this case. 2. ICWA applies to all Native American children regardless of the circumstances. 3. If the Capobianco's are really interested in the well being of this child and love her the way they say they do, why hire a PR firm and travel with a reality T.V. show host? They haven't protected her at all. 4. The biological mother did in fact legally give up custody. That means she has no rights, no opinions, no involvement what so ever. Once she signed those papers she should have no influence over what happens to Veronica. 5. Dusten Brown never signed away his rights legally. When he discovered what he had signed, he immediately tried to take back the paper and was threatened with being arrested. 6. It's a complicated case because it was based on deception by the bio mother, her attorney, the adoptive couples attorney's and the couple themselves. Bio mother did everything she could to prevent Dusten Brown being identified as Cherokee. 7. Dusten Brown will go to prison rather than give up his daughter. I don't know about South Carolina but Oklahoma's governor has committed political suicide. The Cherokee Nation provides millions of dollars to the state and she has betrayed the citizens she vowed to protect. I hope what ever profit she's gaining from this is worth it.

Re: “The Capobiancos should stop fighting for custody of Baby Veronica

If the Capobiancos had an ounce of decency or honor they would have refused to take Veronica until they were assured there was no natural family member (maternal or paternal) who wanted to parent her. Rather, they dug their heels in and fought her father for two years instead of immediately acknowledging and understanding Dusten's dilemma of having his child sold to strangers behind his back. By their actions, since he pressed his objection to the underhanded and unethical, if not illegal, attempt to adopt his child, including blatant and offensive exploitation and commercialization of a minor child's image and name to reap tens of thousands of dollars, threatening her safety and security, threatening her father and family, and more, they have proven they are unfit to parent a rhododendron let alone a child! Their behavior is classic antisocial personality disorder - characterized by a pervasive pattern of disregard for, or violation of, the rights of others.
The sum of their outrageous behavior - violating gag orders, hiring PR firms, taking what should have been a private matter to the court of public opinion and peddling lies and slurs against Veronica's father on talk shows, in newspapers, "news" programs, exploiting Veronica by using her image and name to raise yet unaccounted-for money, contracting with a TV reality show producer to film her and invade her privacy (show up at her school uninvited and unannounced), demanding public officials arrest her father and "seize" her, threatening the safety and security of the Brown family to such an extent that they had to move out of their family home and into tribal housing and be provided with 24-hour security guards, posturing and threats to grab her and run, and more - has proven to the world that so-called "love" for this child and her safety and security are the furthest things from their minds. By their actions, they have indelibly harmed her for life. They began exposure of an innocent child for maudlin public display in such a manner that she will never know privacy and peace again. From now until forever everyone will know who and where she is. Her security has been compromised beyond repair. For these reasons and more, including the underhanded, unethical and probably illegal means in which she was abducted from OK at birth, they have forfeited any right of entitlement or possession of this or any other child, if not provided ample grounds for criminal charges and civil liability to the Brown family.

Re: “NAACP leaders respond to Marley Lion/Trayvon Martin comparison

well I'm a black person and as far as the zimmerman case goes, they judged right. I mean I understand that zimmerman had no right to follow him, but he did shoot in self defense: he was getting his ass beat and he had proof of it. That's just something you can't deny. With the marley case he should justice also as he was a so called "Trayvon Martin" only of a different skin.
