Re: “Philando, Folly, and Flags

Lisa is quite right. At what point is enough enough? At what point do we cross the line from politically correct and become the Karma Police? In my eyes the South lost and losers do not get to fly the losing flag, but hey, that's just my OPINION. The flag is offensive to many and I cringe when I see it, (the banjo theme from deliverance always plays softly in my mind when I see the goobers with the flag.) HOWEVER, it is these groups right under the first amendment to fly it and I support the first amendment. I do not have to agree with anyone's ideology or beliefs and I can even find it repellant but I will support their right to have their beliefs in the USA. As for the Confederate statues being removed, I wonder where we stop there as well. George Washington owned slaves, quite a few of them actually and married into owning even more of them. Do we now demand the removal of the Washington monument?? Should it be renamed? (maybe to the pointy dick of DC) Do we insist that every high school in America named after Washington change its name because its just glorifying a man who was a slave owner? How about Washington DC? Do we rename it too? I mean come on, its named after a man who was a slave owner. Right? Right? At what point do we stop? How about that randy old goat Tommy Jefferson. Over his lifetime, Thomas Jefferson owned over six hundred slaves. Lets erase his name from every public building, high school and University too. Right? I mean fairs fair. All that aside, the folly boat should be for Happy B'days, remembering lost loved ones and saying Happy Mothers day to lowcountry Moms, not for political or religious messages of any type.

Re: “Sermet's to be replaced with Gentry Bar by Southern Charm's JD Madison

I would love some information regarding the music at the closing of Sermet /opening of Gentry Bar. What is the name of the group playing the music that night? What was that last song they played (loved it)? Is that a dance done mostly in SC or the south, slow dancing then everyone stops to clap in time to the music? I've not seen that done before and would love more information on all. Thank you.

Re: “Philando, Folly, and Flags

As for the direction of the crooked cross and you saying that the Indians use it solely in an opposite way from the Nazis, you're completely wrong. You're confusing the the left-facing sauwastika with the right-facing swastika. Both are still widely used on the Indian subcontinent today by Hindu and Buddhists. The left-facing is more commonly used in Buddhism than Hinduism and the right-facing is more commonly used in Hinduism than Buddhism. Facts are stubborn things.

Re: “Philando, Folly, and Flags

I'm not here to defend neo-secessionists nor the flying of the Confederate flag on federal or state property, but what exactly do you propose to do about US citizen's first amendments to express themselves and their right to fly that flag, as well as the Nazis swastika or any other noxious flag, if they so wished? The world is filled with offensive things, offensive images, plenty stuff we all wish didn't exist, but when you start lumping large groups of Southerners who's only "crime" according to you and the author of this piece, is that they honestly feel a connection to a flag that their ancestors, 98% who never owned slaves, died beneath believing that they were defending their home county, you become the modern day hater and oppressor of rights that Americans have died for since the founding of the Republic. And once you start down that totalitarian road, the non-flying of offensive flags and removal of old monuments are going to be the least of your problems.

Re: “Philando, Folly, and Flags

Lisa, the Confederacy betrayed the US and seceded, mainly to make sure that slavery would not be abolished. And while the slavery is biblical and the slaves held by the Israelites were mostly white people, here in the South, as also earlier in the US, the slavery was racist, white people could not be owned as slaves, that was illegal.
In India the swastika goes in the opposite direction from the Nazi swastika. So there is no way they would fly the flag of Nazi Germany, with the Nazi swastika in the middle. That was the official flag of Germany at that time.
The KKK was founded as basically a continuation of the Confederacy, to keep the blacks oppressed, in segregation, and not voting. It worked for many years here. The KKK used to be supported by most whites here. Some cities and towns still have statues of the founders of the KKK. But some say, let's not tear down the statues, that would be erasing history. Of course in Germany they tore down the statues of Hitler, but they did not erase history, they still teach about Hitler in schools.

Re: “Philando, Folly, and Flags

They still fly the swastika in India. Its an ancient symbol of good luck there and always has been until the Nazis stole it. Sort of like how the neo-secession and the Klan did with the Confederate battle flag. I suggest you get the Indian ambassador on the phone and vent your outrage. I'm sure he'll take your call.

Re: “Philando, Folly, and Flags

You don't see Germans flying the Nazi swastika flag in Germany today. Yet there are people here in the US still flying that treasonous anti-American Confederate flag that was first flown to defend the institution of racist slavery.

Love your article. I'm member of old-time "aristocracy" which has founded and belonged to a yacht club since 1853, and I have lived in Charleston, but I believe in the principle "from those who have much to those who have little."

All but one link (the dictionary link) is dead. How about some valid sources that Mount Pleasant was actually named for that? This is BS.

Re: “Why South Carolina needs more of the North's best doughy export, Dunkin' Donuts

I grew up on Dunkin'. After I was introduced to Krispy by a neighbor soon after I moved to Charleston, I have never looked back.
I had 2 dogs on daily meds. Even they would only take their pills surrounded by a piece of hlazed donut. Once I could fund them nowhere. Even the bakery on Savannah Hwy had sold the last dozen. I returned home with glazed crullers. The dogs spit them out- too cakey.
Krispy Kreme is THE best!!!

Re: “Why South Carolina needs more of the North's best doughy export, Dunkin' Donuts

@Priscilla, for the express shops they typically have a large kitchen that provides all their area stores with fresh, hot donuts every morning. they're not delivered frozen to any of the shops. this would destroy the yeast and they wouldn't rise properly.

The Party of Smaller Government strikes again. Is anyone surprised the SCGOP would comply with this? Bootlickers from top to bottom. Imagine if Hillary were president and tried to pull a stunt like this.

Please take yourself and terrible Dunkin' Donuts back to where you came from. That place is awful and a perfect example of bland s**t food from yankeeland.

Maybe the voter info should be sold for 50k in instead of $2500

He says he never called anyone these names, he doesn't say he's never used them. As for Paula Deen, let's see, Bill Maher, John Mayer and others say nicer, but they get a pass. Damn liberal racists

At least he puts out great points, while you just act as a typical liberal, can't beat them, than denigrate them. And you call Trump a bully, Tupper?

Wow. DJ's not paddling with all oars as it appears he is a "Scotter" in "Bizarro World" - and divisive himself. Let the white and elite gods think and rule the world. FNC strikes again.
