Re: “McLeod Plantation to grow Sea Island cotton for the first time since the 1920s

What a grand place McLeod is today! This makes the experience even richer. Thank you Bill McLean for this new chapter. Thank you, Shawn Halifax, CCPRC, staff and volunteers!

Re: “Orange is the New Black evokes the Charleston shooting, but fails to follow its own message

Wrong premise. It's not a gag. It's alluding to how common those devastating incidents have become.

Re: “Dylann Roof didn't win, but did we?

Jshicke, background checks rarely take more than about 5 days. So when Roof was able to buy the gun in 3 days, even though he would have failed the background check, then he could have gone to do his massacre very quickly, if he knew that FBI is working on background checks even after a gun is sold and then sends ATF to confiscate the gun. I guess that is not what FBI normally does. After all, NRA was spreading the propaganda that Obama wants to confiscate our guns. So the FBI did not want to do anything to feed that propaganda and send in troopers to confiscate somebody's legally bought gun, risking a shootout. After all, we remember what happened with Branch Davidians.
And most whites in SC did not stand side by side with most blacks in the voting booth, they voted against the wishes of most blacks. The racial divide in the voting booth is still very wide in SC.
And why not take down the flag that represents racism and slavery? Look at Germany, after the war was over, they quickly took down the similarly hateful Nazi flags and even banned flying that flag. South Carolina did not go that far, to ban flying the Confederate flag. If somebody wants to show his support of white supremacy, he can still go and fly that flag. Or should South Carolina have the Nazi flag at the statehouse? Or the Soviet flag? We don't want flags of hateful ideologies to represent our state. We have freedom of speech, so a citizen can fly the flag of Nazi Germany or Soviet Union or Red China or apartheid South Africa, but such horrible flags should not represent our state, which we are trying to make better.

Re: “Stella's is a gift from the Greek gods

I'm sad that every picture is of meat or seafood. Greek cuisine lends itself well to plant-based options. I will have to check out the menu.

Ice Bing Cafe's Mango Lemon Bing was so refreshing on this hot summer day in Charleston! Great addition to the Cannonborough-Elliotborough area!

Re: “Strawless Summer challenges Charleston bars and restaurants to give up plastic straws

Good for you, Charleston! I hope this movement catches on all around the country. I would have no problem using a paper straw at a bar or restaurant, because sometimes I just enjoy a straw. The few pennies extra to cover the cost are completely worth it because who doesn't like helping to save the planet whilst enjoying a summery cocktail?

At home I use metal straws. They're reasonably priced, much easier to clean than you might think, last forever, and feel delightful when your cold beverage passes through!

Re: “Strawless Summer challenges Charleston bars and restaurants to give up plastic straws

There are commercially available, environmentally degradable and biodegradabale plastics. They cost just slightly more than the regular materials. Back in the Eighties, I worked on a semi-commercial project to produce grades of polystyrene and polyethylene that disintegrate much faster than the regular product. In the nineties, reducing litter. I worked on a biodegradable commercial polymer. Both are available commercially. All it needs is a consumer willing to pay an extra 2-3% more for the product.

Re: “Strawless Summer challenges Charleston bars and restaurants to give up plastic straws

I try to avoid straws in general, and lately, whenever I use them I put a 'knot' in them and bend them, thinking the big chunk in the middle, and bent and less stiff, will keep them from doing more damage than necessary (just like slicing the plastic holders of a six pack of cans, same concept).

I'd like to mention a few things though. First of all, why can't this county recycle straws? That's almost insulting. Straws are plastic. Other plastics work why doesn't that one?

Second of all, none of this would be a problem had we just kept with paper straws like in the good old days. I prefer them anyways. Why the heck do we not use them anymore in favor of plastic ones? I get if they're in a drink for 1 hour they might get soggy, but in general they hold throughout the drink, and most people won't re-use them anyways, that's why they get thrown away. I really don't get the point of that.

Another idiotic overblown analysis of what Trump says. The hatred for our president is so ugly & so un American. Then to read the spoiled ding dong...city dweller use the F word several times certifies how looney & unhinged the left has become.

Fascinating story. I wonder what it would take to turn Sea Island Cotton into a major crop?

Re: “Meet the producers behind some of the Holy City's most extraordinary recordings

It's seeing articles like this that remind me how there are so few female music producers in the industry (5% or less), and even less that are celebrated or recognized. Maybe the dudes that are featured here can consider contributing to Women's Audio Mission or WomeninMusic and do what they can to close the gender gap:

https://www.womensaudiomission.org
http://womeninmusic.org/

It would be great if CCP could address this, too.

Re: “Mayor of New Orleans makes the case for removing Confederate monuments

Grandstanding hypocrite. Remove some old generals monuments but leave intact the statute and the main named square of the individual responsible for personally directing the extermination of the Creek, Seminole and Cherokee tribes, the man who created the Bataan Death March of the 19th century, the Trail of Tears, that bastard, Andrew Jackson.

Re: “S.C. attorney general joins nationwide investigation into opioid manufacturers

"As one of a handful of states where the amount of painkiller prescriptions outnumbers residents"

Whoa, say what? How does that happen legally? We getting out of state patients who come here for pain killer prescriptions? Sure would have liked to hear more on that point in this article, but they make the statement, and just let it hang.

Re: “Dylann Roof didn't win, but did we?

I agree with Jamie, I am glad this article, and the others were written. It is good to have open dialog to better understand each other. So many disagreed with my above comment, but apparently dialog is not what they wanted to have. So I sit here scratching my head over what it was they particularly disagreed with... and why.
