Dustin, your column is hilarious & addictive! If only you could recap all my shows! Thomas is such a slime ball. Hes going to string along Ashley just to torment Katherine. This is weird because he really does seem to love Katherine somewhere in his flawed soul. The baby shower, though! Im still having nightmares about that baby cake! And someone please send Patricia for etiquette lessons. When you offer to host a shower, its customary to ask the guest of honor to supply the guest list. Cant wait til next week. Seriously, my hope is that you get cable and are asked to guest write an episode! Bravo, are you listening?

This is America's problem. While I do feel for landlords trying to make money, the housing affordability issue is a nationwide issue that effects everyone. Private equity groups and other capital holders are squeezing the middle-class dry by purchasing apartment complexes and neighborhoods across America. I recommend this podcast for more information about the subject.

As a 25-year military veteran as well as the son of a sailor, the son of a son of a sailor and witness to countless combat related deaths, I see no problem with this starting on Memorial Day or letting you pedal any other day. Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence, St. Paddy's is not celebrated in Ireland and we all don't get to take Labor Day off and bask in the reality that we could easily be unemployed. Stop being negative Nancy and let's hope this is as successful as other business ventures have been in Charleston.

this article just like the claude Anderson babble, is more babble. In 1913, there were 40,000 black owned businesses; 261,000 in 1980; 339,000 in 1987. THERE ARE CURRENTLY NEARLY 3 MILLION, NOW. THEY GENERATE ABOUT $150 BILLION IN REVENUE/PROFIT EACH YEAR, WHICH IS MORE THAN THE VAST MAJORITY OF COUNTRIES; AND IT IS MORE THAN 10 PCT OF BLACK OVERALL WEALTH/PURCHASING POWER.

You are conveniently ignoring the many variables of life. What if a marriage falls apart and your spouse won't pay child support? What if your spouse dies? What if the insurance company won't cover treatment and my monthly medications triple in cost? What if my company lays me off and I have to "get on the dole" and receive unemployment until I find a job that pays comparably? What if my transmission goes out and I end up being late to work a couple of times because the bus was late and my boss cans me? What if I am a roofer and I fall and get hurt
and can't work for 5 months?

What if my roommates leave on sudden notice and I am stuck with a month's rent on my own? What if I decide to leave my retail job and go work at a nice restaurant downtown? I might make $200 in tips each night, but the restaurant doesn't offer health insurance. What if I decide to go to school and better my life? Going to be difficult to do that if I am divorced or if my spouse passed away. I might be able to do it, but I better pray like hell that transmission stays intact because I'm only able to work part-time.

I get what you are saying. We want people to make the "right" decisions, and we don't want to encourage people to sit around not be productive members of society. But again, someone has to work the many jobs that don't pay a very good wage. While it may take me 5 years to become an assistant manager at Wendy's, what if I have a disaster during those 5 years? If I'm living on a thin line, all it takes is one disaster for me to get a month or two behind rent. I'm sure some of the people being evicted do deserve it, but there are undoubtedly others who are working hard just to get by.

Their plight? You mean their bad decisions and no, we should neither reward them nor encourage others to do the repeat them.

You do what responsible people do when you are not earning enough to rent your own place - you get one or two housemates to defray the rent and you save money and work hard so that you can get promoted and/or find a better source of income. You sure as hell don't have children until you are married and have the income to support being a parent.

What you do not do is get on any dole program. Ever.

To the person claiming that buying cigarettes is what leads to evictions, it's much more complicated than that. Your advice is akin to douchebag Jason Chaffetz, who said that people foregoing cell phones would allow them to purchase health insurance. Of course giving up things we purchase would leave more money at the end of the month. But as the article said, an unexpected expense such as a health emergency or a car repair can leave people in a hole. A person working full time at a retail position will likely bring home 1300-1400 a month. The average rent in North Charleston is $900. You can do the math.

Someone has to work at the PetSmarts and Waffle Houses and Targets. Should we be so callous as to ignore their plight?

ve been to eviction court in north charleston in 2012. i would not say the judge was fair. my mother my mother and i in 2012 was served with an eviction notice for nonpayment of rent, 100 dollars less than the owner himself said to take out to buy insectices for the bedbugs that he undoubtedly knew were there beforehand. had reciepts, recordings of phone calls and recordings of his threats. he showed up with the ncpd and a gun on his holster to serve the papers. because the lease was in my mothers name the judge refused any evidence i had and threatened me with contempt when i asked to speak. i was very polite. he however found that we hadnt could not be evicted but our deposit was not in fact a deposit so to get out and away from the bedbugs we had to break the lease, throw all of our stuff away and let the owner keep the not deposit deposit. without a doubt this same landlord goes before the same judge with the same lease and same problems over and over. it was at oak terrace on sumner, maybe not the nicest area i know but you should still be treated fairly

Easier to just put in a lot. I was going to a place downtown to get my nails done. Screw it. They will lose my business. Not their fault. But to pay double for parking is just not worth it for me. And maybe Ill just Uber it with friends when we go out for dinner. It probably will be cheaper in the long run. I dont shop downtown. I do my clothing shopping when Im out in Los Angeles. God forbid we should get a Nordstrom or Bloomdales here.

Tom - when building apartments, walls are really cheap. Plumbing and electricity eat up a lion's share of construction costs. Because of that, shrinking a 750 sq. ft. apartment to a 500 sq. ft. apartment would not diminish the cost to make a substantial reduction in rent.
A second factor is the cost of returning an apartment to the market. I have a neighbor that rents out half of his duplex at a very reasonable rate. The problem is his tenants rarely last more than two years, and he has had to replace carpeting and appliances twice in the last 5 years because of tenant damage. Those costs have to be worked into his rental rate.

Amen Stephanie! Red lights mean 2 more cars can speed through an intersection and cars simply don't yield to pedestrians. Bicyclists are typically harassed and treated like road kill. So much for southern hospitality!

It's hard to imagine a world so bereft with violence that the mere mention of deescalating that violence leads to more threats of violence. That is it is hard to imagine it until you go online. Once online you get bombarded with partisan hate fueled rhetoric that clogs all sensible conversation. We cannot have good quality discussions online only barbaric name calling. Which is why people shouldn't engage in them. Rather engage in their local marches onto the offices of our politicians. Engage in raising voter turnout and strive for a positive path towards our future. Fear and callousness may be the weapons of a minority but everyone else knows better. It is up to us to encourage them to speak up and defend our children from an outdated and misanthropic mindset bent on destruction.

And

If they arm teachers in SC my daughter will be home schooled, PERIOD.

Perhaps the city should consider variable demand pricing for parking. High demand streets such as King, East Bay, etc. would pay premium pricing, with lower pricing on secondary streets farther away.
