Re: “Spero, an understated local favorite for three years, is closing its doors

Lynnar, I'm so happy for you that you have a stage like the comments section of a free, local alternative weekly to piss all over the hard work of others. I hope that when you have poured your heart, hundreds hours and sleepless nights, love, and not to mention financial sacrifice into trying to make a business work, to see it ultimately suffer and fall, that someone else comes along and also trivializes it. Love to RJ and Rob and Tav and everyone that made Spero wonderful.

Re: “Drawn This Way, A Burlesque Tribute to Cartoons

We saw the Savannah Sweet Tease in Savannah a few months ago during a animal rescue benefit. It was such a fun night. They're great! This show is sure to be entertaining!

Re: “Spero, an understated local favorite for three years, is closing its doors

There is a very simple answer. The food just wasnt that great. I ate there a few years ago. Was it bad? No. But not good enough for me to go back. Same with Two Boroughs Larder. I went back twice. I had a hard time what to order off the menu. The food was just, eh...I have been in the food business. Worked in restaurants. Eaten in Michelin Star restaurants. But, I dont need fancy. I just want straightforward good consistent food.

A point is made that so many people are moving here. Right. Not southerners. Not all of us want Southern food. Not everything has to be made with ham, and bacon and lard. And its fat. Every restaurant has deviled eggs. Why?

Interesting that Five Loaves does incredible. Been in business for years and Two Boroughs Larder was just across the street and couldnt make it. So it was not location. It was the food. Five Loaves offers good, fresh straightforward, nothing fancy food. Perhaps other chefs in this town should learn from this business model.

I go to Los Angeles, and you find a plethora of small restaurants that have great nothing fancy food. Great bread. Great bakeries. Great salads.

Nancy Silverton, who came here last year, during the Food and Wine Festival, has two restaurants in Los Angeles. Italian. One is an expensive one that has a cheese bar! The other one is a Trattoria. Its called Mozza. Why a chef cant open a place like that here, boggles my mind.

Im shocked that a Greek from NYC has not opened a diner here.

Sorry, its not rocket science. Im sure these two young men are very nice. They can scratch their heads as to why it did not work.

All I can say , its very simple. Its the food. If people hear the food is amazing, they will come. Wasnt there a movie that had a line if you build it they will come? Hmmm

Re: “How humble Summerville became a Mecca of punk, metal, and hardcore in the early '00s

It's still really inspiring to think about what some disenfranchised youths in a tiny corner of the country were able to create with precious little money and a ton of optimism and maybe a lot of coffee. I mean that as much for Summerville and Ladson in the '90s and '00s as I do any area (at any time, really) where kids are turning to art and performance to process the world.

As someone who witnessed rather first-hand just how vital Summerville and Ladson were in the 1990s but has no real reference for what came directly after as I left for college and then relocated to another state, I'm curious if a DIY music community exists there now. I'm guessing there likely is one.

Re: “A Note on Suicide

Finally something that helps me understand suicide. My brother went through a dark time and I could never understand it, in fact, I probably made things worse. He's ok now.

Thanks for sharing.

This column! My absolute favorite in The City Paper. I spread the gospel by reading it aloud to other SC-watching co-workers. Excellent job!

Re: “The Southern Poverty Law Center counted 14 hate groups in S.C. last year, up from 12 in 2016

I still don't understand why the Asatru Folk Assembly is listed on the SPLC site. They don't exclude any more than the traditional Jews do (have to be born into or married into that religion). The AFA doesn't target anyone. The only reason they're on anyone's radar is that they exclude some groups from worshiping with them. And why is that a bad thing? They're not saying that you can't believe whatever you want and practice whatever you want, they're only saying they don't want you practicing with them. It's no different than Catholics refusing communion to anyone that isn't a Catholic. The SPLC is a waste of space.

Re: “Mario's Peruvian Chicken is set to open this month in Mt. Pleasant, and it's all about authenticity

Best.Chicken.Ever. When in NYC I go all the way to Corona Queens to get Pico Rico. Used to be cash only. I am thrilled to be able to get real Peruvian Chicken here. Please let them make arroz chaufa too so my life can be totally complete. Also great to see locally owned and operated business in Mt. Pleasant instead of another chain. Live local?

Re: “Mario's Peruvian Chicken is set to open this month in Mt. Pleasant, and it's all about authenticity

I'm peruvian and living in Charleston for over 6 years now, this is the most exciting news, I've been craving this peruvian chicken all the time, this is called, "pollo a la brasa", in Peru, I've tried rotisserie chicken from different places, doesn't even compare. The peruvian spices and the way this chicken is cooked is what makes it unique and don't even let me get started on those delicious Peruvian sauces that accompanie this dish. You can find this type of Peruvian restaurants only in bigger cities like NY, LA,etc. I'm so glad that one is opening here in Charleston. All the success to you Mario!

JD arrives wearing a large fur coat because he just rewatched Coming to America Hilarious- I could not stop laughing! I agree with others you should lwrite about the reunion!

About the Ashley/escort thing...maybe its true, maybe its not. Why is it wrong that the group discussed the possibility? Why do you assume that they are hurling false accusations in an effort to diminish her reputation? How do you know the accusations are indeed false? You lost me on that one...
Side note- being found out to be an escort wouldnt worsen her reputation. Her egregious behavior and lack of any semblance of a conscience has already bottomed out that reputation.

Re: “Renderings revealed for Emanuel Nine memorial by designer of Sept. 11 memorial

The white color of this "sail colored" escalator to nowhere memorial wall design just so happens to be the SAME COLOR AS THE CHURCH ITSELF thereby equating the church to the "white wall of sails+slavery" they are building right outside.

This WHITE coloration being the same intentionally to portray that the escalator to nowhere walls they are building are synonymous to the church itself ( this is done by the designer choosing the same color). I find this design INSIDIOUS and I vote two thumbs down. Could this church be so blind as to build a memorial that equates the AME church to the establishment of "white supression"?

That is just how I see this design. It looks like an escalator to no new heights. It is almost satanic when looked at from that angle.

Re: “Renderings revealed for Emanuel Nine memorial by designer of Sept. 11 memorial

The picture kind of reminds me of an escalator (one that doesn't go to new hieghts like at an airport) from the picture.

Then it looks like this escalator (going to no new heights) becomes a white wall you can rest comfortably inside to block out the noise from the streets...

It kind of feels alien to what actually happened here *when a LONE NUT who watched too much brainwashing news media went crazy and murdered all of those good people, because he was mad over kim kardashian.

Is that curved stone at the middle spot of the memorial a place to put giant hardboiled eggs they are about to eat representing our children?

Is there another company out there that builds monuments? or do these 9/11 commemoration architects like Arad have a monopoly in this market? He sure is a world famous name brand now though he profited so much from 9/11 tragedies?
