My how the mighty have fallen. Quite a testimony to CNN when you have the Charleston City Paper bagging on them.

Re: “Plans for new office space in Charleston’s Old City Jail head to Board of Architectural Review

The stairwells are UGLY! Can't we find a way to make them blend in a bit more with the exterior of the building? Get the architects of that shut-down Clemson building out of the mix and hire someone from Charleston.

Re: “Plans for new office space in Charleston’s Old City Jail head to Board of Architectural Review

In NY I worked in a State owned historic Site that included a Gilded Age mansion. Part of the mansion was used for Office Space while the rest was renovated to be historically accurate and open to the public for tours. If done right this is a good way to preserve the historic site accurately while allowing Public Access in a fiscally responsible way.

I believe it's very important to preserve the history in this beautiful area. The fact that it's a mere two hundred years old is inconsequential.

Re: “Plans for new office space in Charleston’s Old City Jail head to Board of Architectural Review

ha ha ha. That is going to be a great place to work 50 hour work weeks.... I would work overtime there just to be able to say that. This may be a wonderful Idea! I don't know I can't decide for sure...

People in other countries turn 1000 year old buildings into cell phone stores these days so who are we to think we need to preserve memories of the ENTIRE old jail from 200 years ago?

Urban Sprawl is the devil... At least they are not bulldozing more nature in Johns island to build yet another Harris Teeter shopping complex i guess....

I don't know what is the lesser of two evils I guess... Loss of a historic landmark or urban sprawl...The old City Jail is also one of the attractions of our entire tourism industry.
The old Cigar factory looks pretty nice these days tho....

Re: “S.C. Airbnb reservations spike 380% for upcoming solar eclipse, Charleston tops list

nobody cares. Does anyone else know any cool websites/aps that can help us not get screwed by our corporate overlords who work for/advertise in city paper? Why does EVERYTHING need regulation? The HOA downtown doesn't allow air b2b so why are you advertising this to people?

Re: “The Agenda: Cruise ships hit downtown cap; State to discuss I-526; Graham reacts to McCain cancer diagnosis

Uhh...Mr. Santos....
The underlying reason for the limit on docking is not due to a lack of dock availability. It is to keep the city from being more overrun with tourists than it currently is.
Somehow this plan is either completely tone-deaf to the will of the city or is yet another end run to circumvent regulations which have previously been negotiated and accepted as a reasonable compromise for all residents of Charleston.
Regardless of the unknown motivations and interests of Mr. Santos, it seeks to circumvent the efforts of residents to maintain the quality of life in our city.

Given recent events, I'm not surprised. Glad he now knows what that noise symbolism feels like. Maybe he can help solve this crap we've dealt with for centuries

Re: “Jury sides with family of CofC grad Sarah Jones in wrongful death lawsuit

Let me get this straight. A film crew, knowingly, trespassed onto railroad property to shoot a movie. They filmed on a live railroad and believe it's the railroad company's fault for the killing? It would take a train at least a mile to stop at that speed and they should stop because some people want to shoot a movie? Screw that. Get the heck out of the way.

Re: “The Agenda: Cruise ships hit downtown cap; State to discuss I-526; Graham reacts to McCain cancer diagnosis

Reaching the (voluntary) cap (of 104 per year) means that there are no more open slots available for the remainder of the year because they are all booked - apparently thru 2018. Booked ships will continue to dock.

Re: “The Agenda: Cruise ships hit downtown cap; State to discuss I-526; Graham reacts to McCain cancer diagnosis

So we've hit the cruise ship cap about half way through the year. So that means no more ships allowed until January, right?......suuuure

So what the Hell has the College of Charleston have to do with this story other than to promote chest-thumping by homies? The quality of journalism in this paper with columns like this and those by Ali Akhyari and Dwayne Green show a complete lack of ability by the editor

Re: “Charleston School Board members approve new stadium on Wando campus and give themselves a raise

Yep. Save millions by moving the stadium to Wando, and then spend it on higher salaries for the board members. They knew the stipend when they ran for office, yet now they say it is a financial burden to serve. So quit.

Re: “Reports of massive hacking attempts of South Carolina’s voter system likely overblown

It would be a greater service to SC if an in in depth story on the history of the ES&S Ivontronic machines, and include independent research instead of merely being used as a tool for the SC Election Commission. It's another round of 'move along, nothing to see here.' Meanwhile, we are still using ancient equipment that was forced on us in 2004, These machines have no accountability, no paper trial so we're 'faith based' voting. I see the recent admissions by the SEC is a step forward. For years, we've been told that when the machines freeze, votes are lost forever, it's all 'human error.' (meaning the poll clerks, et al.)

Re: “Publisher of James Dobson, the anti-gay founder of Focus on the Family, releasing Tim Scott and Trey Gowdy's book

At least the SPLC actually works for a living. Their record of taking down hate groups and standing up for the underrepresented speaks for itself. The FRC is just another parasitic, gleefully divisive, purely partisan Washington lobbying group. Their only excuse to exist is to hustle whitebread sharia law to the tabloid addled culture war dupes.
