Re: “UPDATE: 70+ Charleston restaurants have signed on to the Strawless Summer Challenge

Use paper straws! There really is such a thing!!! I used them when I was a kid. They made them until the 1960's when they were replaced by plastic straws.

Re: “Strawless Summer challenges Charleston bars and restaurants to give up plastic straws

What's wrong with paper straws?? I used those all the time when I was a kid! They are biodegradable.
They made paper straws up until the Sixties when they were replaced by plastic straws.

Re: “Why are white men turning on women?

you worry about being able to raise them to be good men- because you cannot know how. your worries are justified. only a good man can raise a good man. or the cruelties of a world filled with evil can provoke a man to change it. but a woman can never raise a boy to be a good man. she can only raise a boy to be a good boy.

Re: “Charleston's printed accolades may be doing more harm than good

Charleston's printed accolades are not doing more harm than good. Yes, our infrastructure is suffering and it has been for a long time. Luckily the gas tax passed and road projects will start churning in the next few years. Like the writer states, the Rust Belt cities have lost key industries and now those cities are noticeably shrinking. Therefore, I would think it would be wise to not shew away tourists as tourism is a key industry of Charleston. Charleston is a wonderful place that is full of activities and entertainment. We should be happy that we live in a place that is on the rise, unlike the rust belt.

@NewslessCourier

That's because 526 is a solution for the terrible traffic through the Savannah/Folly/Maybank corridor. The land it is cutting through is already developed or already planned to be developed.

Re: “The Agenda: Cruise ships hit downtown cap; State to discuss I-526; Graham reacts to McCain cancer diagnosis

Uhh...Mr. Santos....
The underlying reason for the limit on docking is not due to a lack of dock availability. It is to keep the city from being more overrun with tourists than it currently is.
Somehow this plan is either completely tone-deaf to the will of the city or is yet another end run to circumvent regulations which have previously been negotiated and accepted as a reasonable compromise for all residents of Charleston.
Regardless of the unknown motivations and interests of Mr. Santos, it seeks to circumvent the efforts of residents to maintain the quality of life in our city.

Given recent events, I'm not surprised. Glad he now knows what that noise symbolism feels like. Maybe he can help solve this crap we've dealt with for centuries

Re: “Jury sides with family of CofC grad Sarah Jones in wrongful death lawsuit

Let me get this straight. A film crew, knowingly, trespassed onto railroad property to shoot a movie. They filmed on a live railroad and believe it's the railroad company's fault for the killing? It would take a train at least a mile to stop at that speed and they should stop because some people want to shoot a movie? Screw that. Get the heck out of the way.

Reaching the (voluntary) cap (of 104 per year) means that there are no more open slots available for the remainder of the year because they are all booked - apparently thru 2018. Booked ships will continue to dock.

Re: “Charleston's printed accolades may be doing more harm than good

Charleston and the area in general are suffering from a lack of infrastructure and planning, that was ignored for the last 40 years or so in favor of more glamorous projects like the Guillard, Aquarium, and others.

So we've hit the cruise ship cap about half way through the year. So that means no more ships allowed until January, right?......suuuure

So what the Hell has the College of Charleston have to do with this story other than to promote chest-thumping by homies? The quality of journalism in this paper with columns like this and those by Ali Akhyari and Dwayne Green show a complete lack of ability by the editor

If you have read one interview with Hank, you've read them all. He gives the exact canned answers every time. Too bad he can't drop the bravado and be cool about it...

Re: “Higher police wages could reduce unjust interactions with minorities

"How could 30 days of a human life be equal to $500 to our government?"

"We...make contracts with companies to sell our lives on an hourly basis."

"the government mirrors federal standards and says human lives are worth at least $7.25 per hour."

"the trouble with reducing the value of human lives to a minimum dollar amount does not stop at the debate over idealism versus the "real world.""

I've heard my fair share of Marxist proletariat claptrap, but never so clumsily expressed. In what world of yours does the US or SC governments determine or dictate human value? We're not in Iran nor some banana republic. You rise or fall on your own individual choices, merits, and endeavors in this society, and you determine your own value. I also doubt you have any police friends.

He is just a token race baiter for the CCP. If he was a real journalist he wouldn't write for the city paper. If he wrote anything other than crazy theories on race they wouldn't keep him on.
