I've eaten here twice and both times were delicious! Good food and fast service! Burnt ends were on time! Delicious! And the smoked turkey was way better than i expected. It was tender and juicy. I think i'll go there tonight for dinner.
Nice lady. She has great vegetables year round.
Thanks
This venue is everything you could ever want in a creative space! So much energy, artistic expression and truly a good vibe!
Felt right at home! Everyone polite and clean place. Definitely has my business!
I've actually been to P&L twice now: once for brunch with my husband and last Sunday for brunch with a group of folks from church. This is a group with scheduled monthly get-togethers, and this was our choice for July.
One of the things that attracted me to P&L for this gathering was the menu. We have several group members who have food allergies (gluten and dairy intolerance) and their choices were spot on for this. I corresponded with Jimmy and spoke with Jade and they assured me that any modifications needed to menu items could be accommodated. We ended up with a group of 12, which included three children, two under the age of 5.
To begin: our server didn't blink an eye when we asked for 5 separate checks. Also, there was no gratuity tacked on, which is smart, because we're better tippers than the typical pro-forma gratuity amount.
No one had any issues with food choices, though one of our party was surprised at how spicy the scallop seviche was (It's generally served with crema, which would moderate the heat, but she is the dairy-free member, so there's that). The food was tasty, served well, and paced well. Most of the table had the red pork posole, served over Masa grits with a fried egg on top. Yummy! The two littles had chocolate chip pancakes and wolfed them down. One of our number had the chilaquies and raved about them.
I'm really not sure why there are negative reviews of this place. Perhaps it's different at lunch and dinner, but we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, and my experience in setting up the event was stellar. Kudos to Jimmy, Jade, our waitress (whose name I unfortunately did not get) and the manager on duty yesterday. I can heartily recommend P&L for your next group meet -- or date night!
The absolute best in the area. Always fresh, always honest (they let us know right off that the shrimp wasn't local. We drive from Goose Creek to Mt. P, passing many other places on the way. It's that good.
I don't know what these trolls are on or where exactly they are going from the 3 crab shacks, but if they are talking about the crab shack on Folly Beach, they are obviously off their meds or trolls for work as a web advisor for a competitive restaurant. For instance, The Super Saturn kind of gave themselves away as they mentioned leading people away from the "Clean" establishments downtown. Jealous?! Competition? I doubt he's ever worked at a downtown restaurant as most all of them have rats, roaches, mold and bacteria in the kitchens under the units, etc. I've worked in the expensive restaurants downtown (I won't mention names) and let's just say some kitchens don't deserve near an A rating but get at least $40 a plate for food. Did they go to the other ones in other locations versus the one on Folly Beach that has been a favorite for 18 years as the FBCS is locally owned by a 40 year veteran of restaurants and is really picky about the quality of the food and the cleanliness of the place. Guy above, says the crab legs are "precooked" but the clusters are frozen which is WRONG! as they are flash frozen and purchased from local seafood distributors while the crab legs are inspected for quality. The owner also pays for the top grade levels of seafood as yes, you can purchase low grade seafood and the lowest is usually served in places like Chinese buffets. They aren't pre-cooked and for the price he pays, they had better not be or frozen twice. He'll send them right back. He checks all of the food personally before letting them deliver the fresh food. He purchases locally sourced shrimp from McClellanville which don't have that "soapy" cheap shrimp taste list a lot of places do. The scallops are Bay Scallops and are the top grade level and simply amazing! Two Things to get, the She Crab Soup which is actually the REAL recipe of Charleston and not loaded down with a ton of fake or canned crabmeat and the Shrimp and Grits are terrific. The fried foods are lightly battered so they have a great taste as in fact, pretty much everything on the menu is fantastic. Now, is the FBCS a 5 star restaurant with nice 1000 thread count table cloths?! NO! It's a "SHACK" with buckets which means it's going to be ultra casual and just a fun place to eat and a great value for the money which is still fairly costly due to seafood with the higher grade quality of the food which cost more but well worth it. While this endearing "Dive" has the lived-in local restaurant feel, it is deceptively "clean" versus the "shack" look as the kitchen gets cleaned every night even the cooking units and every weeks the entire place gets a serious scrub down for extra cleanliness! It is a fried and grilled seafood place after all which requires extra cleaning daily. It is one of my favorite places to go and get real, local seafood versus downtown where they give you a few shrimp and a 6 oz steak for $45 dollars. I mean, if you like California - Manhattan - Charlestonian fusion then look no further than downtown for the food is great but bring the CC as most of the high end restaurants will charge as they're menu is nouveau cuisine which is fine, but what happened to real Charlestonian restaurants? The Folly Beach Crab Shack Might not look like an ultra-modern snobotorium where you will drop $200 for 2 people to eat, but it's got honest food, good quality food that tastes great and is affordable. This place is a must, for visiting Charleston. I would also recommend Page's Okra Grill on Coleman Blvd. if you want good ol' southern cooking while staying in Mt. Pleasant near Shem Creek along with The Wreck and Shem Creek Bar and Grill for good seafood in an ultra casual local restaurant. Downtown, there is McCrady's, Peninsula Grill, The Mill's House, The Harbor Club, Carolinas, Henry's for the cool history and don't miss Hank's Seafood which is pricey, but great! Also, do not miss Rue De Jon, Coast, Fish, Husk or Cru Cafe as Cru is a small romantic dining bistro in an old Charlestonian Single home but highly recommended! Btw, If you crave duck, go to a local dive bar called the Tattooed Moose and get the Duck Club Sandwich which was featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. Now, then, let's get back to the reviews above...some people are just never happy unless they complain and the top three statements were not' warranted had the reviewers knew the behind the scenes truths of supreme level of seafood served "beach/shack/rustic" decor with historic artistic murals of Folly Beach with a lived in look. It's a Seafood "SHACK" for the kid in all of us! It's where the older locals go to eat and nowhere else as it's the "Cheers'" Folly Beach. Seriously, get the She Crab Soup with the sherry! Thank you for reading the truth. Best, a true Charlestonian.
I picked some really great tomatoes corn and a watermelon last week. I'm going back today.
Ten star establishment! Great pizza!
I've been going to this store since it opened. Good selection of wine and liquor.
The owner has a hard job - tourists get upset he cannot sell mixers, has to close at 7 & isn't open on Sundays. The parking lot situation was difficult with everyone from near by businesses and events spots using the lot;however, it has improved.
I am often stopped by tourists trying to find a liquor store after they see Charleston restaurant cocktail prices. I send them to Pence's.
Amazing adventure park with an energetic, well-trained staff. Obstacles are awesome and increase in difficulty as you move through the course. Fun for the whole family.
Had dinner there last Thursday. A 30-minute wait but it passed quickly. Waitress was excellent, very attentive without being intrusive - a tough balance. Food was great, view was great. Will definitely return!
So Sorry we sold our business on Shem Creek but you can follow us on our family face book page. Team Magwood! We are no longer at 110 Haddrell street Mt. Pleasant
