Best Happy Slapper

Sheriff Al Cannon

Staff Pick

When Charleston County Sheriff's deputies pulled over Timothy McManus after a high-speed chase hitting 100-plus on the odometer, things got ugly fast. The deputy who successfully chased down McManus punched the suspect as he pulled him from the car, and a police dog pounced on the suspect while he was on the ground and apparently not resisting officers. Some time after that, Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon decided a 23-second dog bite and a pummelling weren't enough — he then slapped McManus while he was under arrest, a fact that Cannon later admitted to the press. SLED is now investigating the incident, while some citizens have begun a campaign to have the sheriff removed from his job.
