Whether you’re a dog person or a cat person, a death-metal person or a math-metal person, you can agree that Charleston Animal Society Community Engagement Director Kay Hyman is a friend of all animals. She’s got a big heart and an even bigger dog-mobile that she proudly drives in parades around the Charleston area to promote her organization’s mission. You probably know her from local news spots that feature her imploring Charlestonians to open up their hearts and homes to adorable shelter pets, but you might not know that she’s also helping the Charleston Animal Society work toward a goal of being a no-kill organization — that is, a shelter with a 90-percent live release rate. This year, their 10-point plan for achieving that goal includes measures like vaccinating feral cats, fighting animal cruelty, and using social media to reconnect lost pets with their families.
