5 ridonkulous reasons to head to the Isle of Palms

1. The deck at the Windjammer. There's plenty of barroom fun to be had inside this sandy tavern and music venue, but some of the funniest, sunniest, and sexiest activities take place on their spacious deck overlooking the busy volleyball court and the boardwalk winding through the dunes.

2. Crabbing at Breach Inlet. Serious local anglers get all hot and heavy about boating around the waterways — which can be stressful and expensive — but there's something uniquely relaxing and zen-like about crabbing for blues in the creeks and inlets with a few lines, a few smelly chicken necks, a couple of nets, and a big bucket.

3. The busy brunch scene at Acme Cantina. Every weekend, a variety of East Cooperites — scruffy beach bums, yuppies and their families, cool islanders — line up for hearty, affordable seafood, omelettes, and Mexican-style dishes in the rustic dining room, the bustling bar area, or the slick new side deck.

4. The menu of infused liquors at Huck's Lowcountry Table. Tucked away on a cozy second-floor spot in the middle of the Pavilion, this IOP eatery not only boasts some decadent Lowcountry and Southern dishes, but an ever-changing roster of house-made flavored vodkas and brandies — like their rosemary/jalapeño/peppercorn-infused vodka, an essential ingredient in their popular Bloody Mary. The apricot brandy kicks ass, too.

5. House-sitting at a cottage at Wild Dunes. Not everyone can afford a fancy apartment or a week-long vacation at this well-manicured beach village at the eastern tip of the island, so an opportunity to slip in as a special guest is always worth taking — if only to hang out, tan, and drink at the idyllic Sweetgrass Pavilion for a few sunny afternoons.

Summer Guide 2010

  • 7 ridonkulous fireworks

If you haven't been a part of a bottle rocket war, you haven't lived. The smell of sulphur in the middle of the night sure as hell beats the smell of napalm in the morning. But finding a place to wage war — and enough people to participate — is damn near impossible these days. And rightfully so. Stray rockets have a way of starting unintentional fires and wayward ocular accidents. So stick to the relatively safe stuff.

What's a Donk? Well, it's kind of like pornography: You'll know it when you see it. What? That's not good enough? You need more? OK. Look for a boat of a car — like an Oldsmobile or an Impala — painted the color of a Blow Pop and sporting rims that would fit on Godzilla's ring finger.

Summer is shoving your face into a fruit the size of your head. It's a seed-spitting contest at a backyard barbecue. It's wondering if that one seed you accidentally swallowed will germinate in your stomach. It's bright green and even brighter pink. Summer is watermelon.
