Charleston is a unique place to spend the holidays with the not-so-freezing weather and our beautiful waterways. This year marks the 33rd anniversary for the Holiday Parade of Boats here in the Holy City. Grab a blanket or some lawn chairs and find yourself a spot along the Charleston Harbor to watch a caravan of lit-up sea crafts cruise from Mt. Pleasant, past the Battery, and down toward the Ashley River. The boats can be seen from the Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina (head here for the oyster roast), Patriots Point, and the Mt. Pleasant Waterfront Park Pier on the Mt. Pleasant side. Downtown, you can see the boats from the Aquarium, Liberty Square, the Maritime Center, Waterfront Park, down to the Battery, and into the Ashley River up to the Coast Guard Station. You can expect to see 30 or more commercial and recreational vessels participating in the Parade of Boats. “It gives thousands of families a chance to go to the water’s edge and see a spectacular procession,” says Ray Swagerty, Parade of Boats coordinator. For those of you participating in the parade, prizes will be awarded to the first, second, and third place boats in two categories: power and sail. Bring some cash for a coffee or some hot chocolate, and enjoy the Christmas lights Charleston style.
