George Orwell’s classic novel, 1984, comes to life onstage in this production, directed by Village Rep Co.’s artistic director Keely Enright. For those of you who missed out on this required high school reading, 1984 is about Oceania, a Nation perpetually at war. Protagonist Winston Smith is an editor at the Ministry of Truth, which rewrites history to align the past with the agenda of the ruling party. That’s just his day job, though. At night he’s a bit more of a rebel, pursuing a love affair with a gal named Julia. 1984’s cast includes Village Rep ensemble members Patrick Arnheim, Sierra Garland, Brian Turner, Robbie Thomas, Dave Reiwald, Teralyn Tanner, John Black, and new performer Levi Adkins. The book has recently been performed on stages across the country, too, including a performance at Santa Monica’s Broad Stage. In an LA Times interview the adapted play’s co-writer Duncan Macmillan gives an example of real life thought police today, “When corporations manipulate how you vote, how you think and what you buy. What is this sense of ‘I’? How does advertising influence us?” —Connelly Hardaway
