This Saturday will mark the opening for a new exhibit entitled Mermaid and Merwomen in Black Folklore at 4 p.m. at the McKinley Washington Auditorium at the Avery Research Center. Co-curated by two nationally recognized fiber artists, Cookie Washington and Catherine Lamkin, the show will feature over 25 quilt and dolls inspired by the myth of the mermaid and merwomen. The exhibit will reflect the oral stories of African ocean and river goddesses brought over by enslaved Africans along the coast of South Carolina.
