Jason Sakran, a local restaurant owner and school district employee, is running for Charleston City Council District 3, which is currently represented by councilman James Lewis.

Sakran formally announced his candidacy in a press release Tuesday afternoon.

"Issues such as affordable housing, crime, education, parking, transportation, and flooding are equally important but at the end of the day — the ability to lead and articulate a shared vision for the entire district is something I believe District 3 needs badly," Sakran said in a statement.

"Constituents deserve a strong and active voice on City Council and we need a representative who fosters timely two-way communication with all constituents," he added.

Sakran is the co-owner of Bon Bahn Mi, a restaurant with locations downtown and in Mt. Pleasant, as well as the project director for Kaleidoscope, an after-school program run by the Charleston County School District.

He has previously written columns for the City Paper.

James Lewis, Jr. currently represents District 3, which covers parts of West Ashley and the peninsula, including portions of Wagener Terrace, North Central, and the Westside neighborhoods. He was first elected in November 1995.

Sakran has raised $2,050 so far, according to the S.C. Ethics Commission. Lewis has not submitted a disclosure form, which is only required after a candidate raises or spends $500.

Charleston residents will vote for mayor and six of 12 City Council seats on Nov. 5.
