At 7:09 p.m., as voters across the Charleston area were still in line to vote, Fox News projected incumbent Gov. Henry McMaster the winner in his match-up against Democratic nominee, state Rep. James Smith. CNN also projected a McMaster win early, according to P&C.

In the same wave of early calls likely based on exit polls, Fox also projected Democratic Senators Bernie Sanders and Tim Kaine would hold their seats.

Obviously, this is not the official word. Voters who were in line at 7 p.m. can still cast their votes.

The S.C. Election Commission website had not officially reported any votes as of 7:55 p.m.

If the projection holds, it would be McMaster's first election as governor, holding on to the seat he assumed as lieutenant governor last year when Nikki Haley was appointed United Nations ambassador.

The 2018 midterms election have been closely watched across the nation, with hotly contested races for governor in neighboring Georgia and Florida, but the McMaster-Smith bout never got close enough to get the same attention. Cook Political Report had the race rated "Likely R."
