On Wed. Oct. 25, Affordabike announced on Facebook that after a year, their contract has expired with their technology provider and they have chosen to "throw in the towel when it comes to bike share." The shop will continue to rent bikes from the store.

In June, CP writer Enid Spitz compared Affordabike and the city's other bike share program, Holy Spokes, analyzing each program's cost and ease of use, with Holy Spokes coming out on top because of its "better UX, a sleeker paint job, and solar panels."

Spitz noted that Affordabike, although not the better program, did win for congeniality: "The local, affable Affordabike shop, which is wonderful in nearly every way except the usability of their BSP ... the shop leads free rides around Charleston, gives tips on how to protect your ride from thieves, and spreads news about philanthropists gifting bikes to school kids. It's hard not to like them." Affordabike owner/founder Daniel Russell-Einhorn says that "it's kind of evident but a [bike share] is a lot of variables and not a lot of money." He says that the shop's rentals are "growing and we're happy about that."

Affordabike is currently selling their excess bikes from the bike share program; the bikes are available in several colors and some are brand spankin' new. They feature an aluminum frame, built in basket, airless tires, bell (!), magnetic lights, plastic fenders, a moped style double kickstand, and a GATES CDX belt drive. The new bikes start at $699 and used start at $300. Contact Affordabike to inquire about buying one.
