If you were wondering why some members of the news crew over at WCBD News 2 were broadcasting online from a Mt. Pleasant coffee shop Thursday morning, you’re not alone.

According to an incident report from the Mt. Pleasant Police Department, the station’s general manager, James Soapes, told police that they had experienced an outage on the station’s internet connection and phone lines around 10 p.m. on Wed. Oct. 4. Soapes informed the officer the following morning around 9:30 a.m. that the news station was still unable to broadcast, adding that the fiber optic cables behind their office appeared to have been cut.

"Also behind the news station was what appeared to be remnants of a small fire that was compiled of silicone tubes and leaves next to a diesel fuel storage tank. There was also an AT&T junction box that was dismantled, as well as lines that were cut from the telephone pole closest to Magrath Darby Boulevard," the report states. The total damage to the news station was estimated at $2,000.

The officer on scene then called for a crime scene investigator, who was able to lift a few fingerprints of a possible suspect. While speaking with an engineer regarding possible vandalism to a nearby generator, the officer noticed a man standing near the rear of the property, who was escorted off the property following a welfare check, according to the report. Upon reviewing surveillance footage from the previous evening, the officer recognized what appeared to be the same man loitering near the building, the report states.

"At one point, the subject took an office chair from the side of the building and he later walked out of frame with it. That office chair was on the concrete pad at the back of the property where I field interviewed the subject from the welfare check," the officer wrote.

According to Inspector Chip Googe with the Mt. Pleasant Police Department, the suspect has been arrested. Kevin Andrew Delconte, 39, of Summerville was booked at the Al Cannon Detention Center Thursday evening around 7:30 p.m. He was charged with malicious injury to property.
