An online petition has been launched to rename Charleston’s Alexander Street in honor of Emanuel AME shooting victim Susie Jackson.

A Charleston native, Jackson lived on Alexander Street, just blocks away from Mother Emanuel. She was fatally shot on June 17, 2015, inside the church where she dedicated much of her time.

In 24 hours, the online petition to rename Alexander Street to Susie Jackson Boulevard has gained more than 400 signatures from individuals all over the country. The petition’s ultimate goal is to collect 5,000 names in support of the renaming.

In September 2015, the portion of Calhoun Street that runs in front of Emanuel AME Church was designated the Mother Emanuel Way Memorial District in remembrance of those tragically killed just months earlier. The following year, the St. Andrews Regional Library was named in honor of shooting victim and library manager Cynthia Hurd on what would have been her 56th birthday.
