Chris Singleton, the Charleston Southern outfielder whose mother was killed at Mother Emanuel in June 2015, was drafted by the Chicago Cubs today in the 19th round of the MLB draft.

Singleton recently finished his junior year at the North Charleston Southern Baptist college that plays in the Big South, batting .276 with a .348 on base percentage over 203 plate appearances this season. The Cubs took Singleton with the 585th overall pick, about halfway through the standard draft, which can last up to 40 rounds.

Chris' mother, Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, was one of nine people killed by a white supremacist inside Emanuel AME Church on June 17, 2015 in downtown Charleston. Just days after the shooting, Chris took part in public tributes in honor of his mother, the eight others killed at Emanuel, and families affected by the tragedy. At one vigil that week, he told the assembled supporters and media, "Love is stronger than hate," which became a refrain in the aftermath of the shooting.
