Don't touch that car

We're in the middle of a bit of a transportation rethink here in Charleston. A citywide bikeshare system recently started, support is growing for the Lowline bike-pedestrian project downtown, and voters approved $2.1 billion in bonds last year, part of which will go toward a fancy new bus rapid transit system along the Rivers Avenue corridor.

That said, most people still drive themselves around the city everyday.

Well on Thursday, CARTA is encouraging local residents to board a bus and take part in National Dump the Pump Day.

For many areas of town, it's easy to find CARTA stops to get you where you're going using Google Transit and RideCarta.com.

To get drivers out of their cars, CARTA is providing a couple incentives:
  • You could win one of two bikes from Affordabike by documenting your journey on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter with the hashtag #DumpThePumpCHS.
  • Get a 30 percent discount on tickets to Thursday's RiverDogs game against the West Virginia Power using the promo code 'dumpthepump'.
Remember that CARTA operates a number of different lines across the city, including limited stop Express routes. All CARTA buses are equipped with wi-fi and front-mounted bike racks you can use at no extra charge. Regular routes are $2 one-way and Express routes are $3.50. (But remember: Each bike rack only holds two bikes and bikes can't be carried onto the bus, so racks may be filled during peak travel times.)
