A frightened carriage horse collided with a parked car Thursday morning. The driver was tossed from the carriage during the incident and transported to a local hospital for observation and treatment.

Around 10:15 a.m. on Thursday, a Charleston Carriage Works horse was turning from North Market Street onto Anson Street when it became startled, according to an eyewitness account. Describing the horse’s behavior as strange as the carriage turning onto Anson Street, an incident report states that the driver attempted to calm the animal, but the horse “took off running.”

Losing his footing, the driver fell backwards off the carriage onto the street, the witness said. With the horse racing forward, the witness claims to have grabbed one of the reins in an attempt to stop the horse. Refusing to yield, the horse turned to the right and collided with a car parked in a gravel lot before stopping. It was at this point that carriage employees were able to regain control of the horse.

According to the incident report released by the city, the horse received two small scratches from the accident and was pulled from all tours for the remainder of the day.
This incident comes just one week after a 26-year-old woman dressed as a dinosaur reportedly startled a carriage horse on Church Street near Tommy Condon’s Irish Pub.

After being startled by the woman in costume, the carriage horse backpedaled and the carriage collided with a nearby parked car. The driver in that incident was tossed from the carriage while trying to regain control of the animal, and he was transported to Roper Hospital with minor injuries after a carriage wheel rolled over one of his legs.

The woman who dressed as the dinosaur surrendered to police the morning after the incident and was charged with disorderly conduct and violating laws prohibiting the wearing of a mask or disguise in public.
